Actually, I used to live not far from Bielefeld. ;) :p :D

No, it's not Texas Woman's University either. :p

I got in at University of Chicago, Georgetown University, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Denison.

    Man, I'm really happy! :)

that's really great, and hard to do!!

in my hs, 100+ people tried for the east...two got in...boston college and nyu...one didn't get in anywhere east but got into stanford, which along with usc are the only two western uni's as good as an ivy...or more accurately, as good and as prestigious, and as expensive, too

for the rest of my hs class, it was a state uni or jc at the best

    btw, isn't denison a chilli? ;)

Dragon Burn has worked well for me.
dozens of DVD and CDs burned just fine.
    No reservation in recommending.

I had a problem with my System and needed to back-up apps and files, having decided to reformat the drive. Toast kept getting an error message and failed to do the job. Dragon Burn got the job done. I suspect that the nod went to Dragon Burn on this because Toast had been on the system and perhaps became corrupt in someway, and I could not find a way to correct that, no matter what I trashed and reinstalled. Dragon Burn was fresh to the system. Otherwise, I considered that Toast was making a call to the system that was rejected and Dragon Burn handled it differently. All useless speculation but such as it is.

No Hesitation to Recommend Dragon Burn.

    Interesting observations.

    Easy DOS It:
Apple's Plan to Provide the Best Darned Windows Experience Anywhere -- Even Better Than Microsoft
    By Robert X. Cringely

One part of last week's column on Apple's Boot Camp that slipped past many readers was the idea that Apple would actually start shipping OEM versions of Windows Vista with at least some of its computers. I believe that will be the case and, if so, it is a big deal, and could lead to Apple becoming the biggest vendor of Windows computers to business, which I think is a hoot.

The story came to me, as many do, from a reader. He's the night auditor at a hotel, and one evening around 2AM, found across from his Front Desk seven somewhat intoxicated Microsoft engineers who wanted to order morning wakeup calls. They started talking and my reader asked if Intel Macs would ever run Windows? That's all it took to start a 20-minute presentation (obviously prepared and long-practiced) on that exact subject, how Intel Macs will run Windows Vista very well, thank you. Not only that, but the Microsoft engineers were convinced Vista would be so superior that nobody would need OS X again.

These same seven engineers must have stopped for a drink not long ago at John Dvorak's house because he's been making the same claim -- that Apple will drop OS X for Windows.

That's not at all what I think will happen. Apple isn't going to throw away its clearest point of differentiation and greatest technical advantage just to become another Windows OEM. That would make them little better than Sony and Sony can out-manufacture Apple any day.

Where Dvorak is wrong is he believes Microsoft's version of the story -- that Apple will abandon OS X, at least for business, replacing it with Windows Vista. After all, isn't that what this Boot Camp stuff is all about, enabling the choice of OSX or Windows?

    Not really.

    The rest. (http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20060413.html)

Until clients want more secure encryption of things, the G5 has little use. That G5's only advantage other than a faster processor is that it can process much larger numbers (twice that of standard 32bit processors). That can make for a much more secure encryption code. Motorola sees not the need for this, so we will not see the G5 focused on until then. IBM is our best bet. huh??!?!

Motorola has already shipped the G5. They're known as the 8540 and the 8560. Yes, these chips weren't designed for Apple (a 75xx would be the G5 for Apple). I don't understand your point.

BTW, the G4's aren't going into cell phones and "other mobile products". They're too expensive and just plain overkill. G4's are being used for communication routers and switchers along with Macs. Moto has other chip lines that go into celly's and pda's.

Is there a seti specific app I can download for windows? Also, I already have an account and don't want a new one. I'm thinking about just not even bothering on that computer. My dual 2ghz PM should be here tomorrow and that will be running seti as soon as I set it up.

He left because someone was mean to him.

Turns out he was right (mostly), but he still didn't have to leave. He should have stayed and shoved it in the guys face. Not that no one believed him (lots did), he just got scared and ran away when pressed for info, which made him look not so reliable.

I had my doubts about the color of the case he showed, it does look better in person though, now that it's here (Dual CD drives!!!).

He didn't seem to know much about the internals though (or if he did, he wasn't telling).

Okay, its time for me to roll over and finally get some new hardware.

I'm looking for a general purpose web applicance, but I do want some horsepower for importing & manipulating photographs in Photoshop. My wife also wants me to convert our old Wedding VHS tape, which I figure can be done on iMovie and a TBD adaptor. FWIW, I have absolutely NO need or interest in high framerate shoot-em-up games.

My current hardware is a heavily upgraded 8500 (400Mhz G4, ~256M RAM, dual 9GB SCSI80's), and the external peripherals that I care about include: CD-R (SCSI), Nikon LS-1000 film scanner (SCSI), a medium format color printer (USB), and a flatbed scanner (USB). Connection to the outside world is a 56K modem, as my local DSL prices & services still aren't up to snuff.

My current thoughts are a 17" iMac, or a Dual 1GHz PowerMac.

I also have a ton of legacy stuff that I know is going to have to eventually go, so I'm looking at at least a Firewire-SCSI bridge. My bigger question is the issues behind supporting this stuff with Native OS 9 vs. running X and the Emulated OS 9. What's the real deal here?

I'd really rather not buy "trailing edge of technology" hardware, unless the implications are that I should really buy something that can still boot into OS 9. Its pretty much "now or never" for that issue.

Similarly, should I really be looking more at upgrading to a firewire-based scanner as a bigger effective performance contributor than worrying about the difference between a single 800Mhz G4 vs. Dual 1Ghz?

    Your thoughts...

While I have no idea, i don't think I like the idea of splitting the computers by making some have certain companie's chips and some have others. it seems to me that companies make their chips differently, so they should respond differently to the OS and the apps.

Is this true, or am I just saying stuff to raise my post count?

Nice app that (in my experience) flawlessly finds missing info on any song in your iTunes directory including artist, album, genre, track number, album art, etc. Even if you don't pay and have the program do your work for you (3 at a time without license) it's still a LOT faster than finding all the information accurately yourself.

    A license is $20 USD.

Its very ironic that it has finally come to fruition, meaning the 20in iMac, it was such wild speculation, now its reality, just goes to show you anything is possible!

Someone inquired about the benchmark Java console program I created:

    It's located at http://members.ij.net/javajedi

I've also included the source (FPMathTest.java) for the curious.

Download the class file and invoke it from Terminal via "java FPMathTest"

I must warn you in advance my PowerBook G4 performs miserabily. It does not utilize Altivec(G4), SSE2(P4), or other vector processing extensions.

    Enjoy :)

Everytime I see the font i think of NIghtmare before Christmas. It looks a little creepy.

THe campaign has some oddness going on such as font and the general dark nature to it but the visuals they use and the concept is what Apple should be trying. The iPod comecials are iconic and instantly recognized. This is a fact. Mac's and OSX are not instantly recognized. Making a strong connection between a Mac ad and an iPod ad just makes sense. I still like the idea of making a prequel to some of hte iPod ads. would be slick I just see a guy jamin on his guitar and laying down a track and then talking with some band mates via ichat then syncs it to his player and he walks out the door and as he walks out it fades into him being the silhouette and then he dances and what ever.

I like it because it shows a Mac as a tool to create.
