I used to be a huge WarCraft junkie when WC3 came out. I was thinking about getting the new expansion to World of Warcraft. My only quesiton is do I have to buy the original WoW, or can i just jump straight into the expansion without the original one>

    Thanks

    Nipsy:

I hate to keep dragging off into arguements about SPEC, but people plainly do not get it.

What I'm talking about is memory, PCI, AGP, northbridge, etc. bandwidth outside of cache. Cache is highly integrated with the processor, so in int and fp scoring, more cache helps, however, int anf fp routines rarely leave the bounds of L1, L2, & L3, where memory bandwith, system I/O, and even paging to disk can all affect relative performance.
How can you conclude this after I pointed out the performance edge given to the Power4 by it's large L3? Do you think that data goes nowhere on the PPC-970? If it's not in the 32 meg L3, it's in RAM, and the reason why the PPC-970 looses is because the RAM is slower than L3... hence we can conclude that memory performance matters.

You might direct your attention to this link:

    http://www.spec.org/osg/cpu2000/docs/readme1st.html#ovw

Q1, Q3, Q5, Q6 and Q11 are informative. Q9 also lists 256 megs of RAM as a requirement, which strongly suggests that that much RAM is used... which means that the performance of said RAM matters.

Notice how SPEC scores remain virtually constant as RAM/storage is added?
This link should explain that very clearly:

    http://www.spec.org/osg/cpu2000/docs/system_requirements.html

A slightly more balanced way of measuring full system perfromance in TPM, where a database, the processor, and the RAM are all stressed.
Only if you are running a server does a server benchmark such as TPM matter.

The current G4 is starved for sytem bandwidth, meaning that when you're waiting, your waiting for the disk to write to memory to feed instructions to the processor, much more often than you're waiting for the processor to execute instructions.
Yes, people desperately want to blame the performance problems of the G4 on it's memory, but really that isn't the case. It's just got a crappy scalar core, lacking things as basic as out-of-order execution and hardware prefetech (although there is a manual prefect in AltiVec... not as good as the auto-pretect in modern x86 chips). As I've said again and again, I have an Athlon on PC133 memory that performs a hell of a lot better than my G4-800-DP.

I don't think the differenct between 1 GHz and 800 MHz is going to be noticeable.

Why even make a 933 MHz???

Seem like a waste to me.

Anyway I would like to see a better video chip, heat issues resolved and maybe the crappy paint fixed.

I second nixd2000's notion... rubbish. take that same chip and underclock it to 532mHz, its still going to generate enough heat to warrant a heatsink and fan...

I joined macrumors seti team a while back transfering 4500 units that I have been crunching on my computer at work. Then it was a vital team, with many active users. After Seti@home transfered to Boink something happened. When I check on the team I find around 20 active/semi active users...
    What happened?
Is everyone folding or what is the reason for this decline?

would it be possable to put the power4 in the powerbook - with multipul cores could it be classed as a DP? - or is that that just too hot and power consuming to go in powerbooks at the moment?

They fix several minor QT Player features that drove me crazy before. Clicking on the QT icon in the dock no longer brings up a new window, if none existed before.

Second, the High Quality video setting can be enabled for every clip that it is available for.

Thirdly, QT Player is now multithreaded so you don't have to wait for a clip to process.

No one really knows for sure, but the timeframe for an update is relatively narrow. If you go by the 6-month update rule, the iBook would get its update in November.

The latest we're likely to see an update (and rumours have suggested it to be more likely) is at MacWorld San Francisco, in early January. If this is what happens, it's very likely that the next iBook model will be a substantial redesign, and not just a speed-bump. Among some of the more interesting rumours have been that there would be a 13" screen in the current 12" case size, that the lineup will move to G4s like the iMac did, and (the most fanciful of them all) we'll see the current 14" iBook replaced with a 14" widescreen model.

No matter what happens, hold on to your money if you want to get the most out of a new iBook; the iBook 700 we have now is great, but it could be the end of its generation.

    hmmmmm interesting idea guys

see i was thinking the same thing about the oct 1st promo end. It would make perfect sense for apple to come out with cheaper LCD or even a 19-20 inch widescreen one. Apple is defianately lacking in the 17-22 range for a monitor. I know a bunch of us would like something slightly bigger than 17 but dont want to pay $2500 for the ancient 22 inch one.

I would recomend to all you prospective powermac buyers to check out FORMACs two monitors. the 17.4 inch one ($899) goes head to head with the apple one and only gets beat if you add the apple promotion to the price.

Also they just came out with a 20.1 inch one ( too bad its not widescreen) that has 1600*1200 resolution. It sells for $1700 but you can get it for under $1630 wihtout tax if youre crafty. It pretty hard to beat the 20.1 at the formac.com website they have awesome comparisons to the 22 and 23 inch apple displays. the 20.1 is also color accurate while the apple high end ones arent.

I allready gave up on the concept of new LCDs in early october, and went with the formac 20.1, so if apple fails to satisfy its loyal followers i suggest to try out what formac has to offer.

Not sure about google pc because you can put it on MAC just like XP on mac!

Well, do you have a preview of Google OS? I'm dyin' to see what it looks like. What if it isn't OS after all, just the plugin for Windows and MAC? Like half of google OS on MAC and XP? Do you know what I'm saying? Well, something like that. lol

I know I'm not alone here, and it pains me to see Macintosh written as MAC. Please, use Mac. It'll give you more credibility around here I think.

Well, after about 18 hours, it finally gave up trying to download the 82 core and went on to a different WU that didn't require that core. It was definitely on Stanford's end. So, I lost a better part of a CPU-day. Oh well. Thanks for the interest, nonetheless.

What kind of school group was it?

What did you and others who didn't get stuck do while waiting for those that did get stuck?

What did those who got stuck tell you about the experience later?

Did any of them get interviewed by the media?

Did Apple explain what happened? Did they apologize or make any other nice gestures? Do you think they handled it as well as they could?

Will you ever go back there?
