Look, Apple is focused on having an Alti-Vec processor, everything has been written for that, now people say the new IBM Power PC based on Power4 might not be Alti-Vec so therefore Apple will not use them. If Apple is so worried about having Alti-Vec, then why in the hell would they be now going to an x86 from AMD. If Apple goes AMD or Intel it would have to be an x86 processor. That is what they build and they are not going to build a small number of some special high tech processor just for Apple, sorry IT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Okay lets say you guys are right and Apple says...yep an AMD Athlon for our PowerMacs in Jan...then what do you do with the "i" and "e" series. Do you continue on with them as a PPC with Alti-Vec and make the PowerMacs with an x86 AMD? HOLY MOLY what a confusing thing. We then have Macs that are not even compatible with each other, you then have to make different software for different computers. What about all the PPC Macs that are out there right now. How long do companies have to make different software for all different types of machines? If Apple goes to AMD it would not be a PowerPC, and for now changing chip arc. would make for lots of confusion.

There is still something called AIM and PowerPC and this is where the future Apple processors will come from. Intel and AMD are not going to plug huge amounts of money into designing an all new chip that is completely compatible with PPC considering Apples market share. If Apple goes x86 then they might as well stick Windows XP on their machines and go head to head with the rest of the PC mess.

I ordered mine the day after the hardware was announced and yesterday I was told by my online retailer that they would start shipping the first or second week in Oct. after a delay was announced by Apple. I dream of the man/woman in brown knocking at the door.

This iPhone ***** is exactly the same thing. Apple creates an iApp so that you can transfer files back and forth to and from certain phones. I'm sure that the list will continue to grow. But I don't think you will see Apple developing a phone, much less, a camera.

Plain and simple: Apple didn't make a camera for iPhoto, and they won't make a phone for iSync. Period.

In all actuality the cell phone is the most popular digital device out there, so that makes it a viable market for Apple. And as much as Apple innovatives I think they could do really good in this market. ;)

    GO APPLE!!! :D

Bullpucky. The RIAA, and recording artists, and Apple, and any other corporate entity, owe you exactly nothing. If you don't like what they're offering, don't buy it -- it's that simple. If enough people don't buy it, then the companies will change -- that's capitalism in action.

Bullpucky -- I'm going to steal that one for future use, if that's OK - I presume it's CC licensed? I agree with your points about the way capitalism functions; of course, a good uproar always works better than sitting quietly.

And I want a pony, but neither is going to happen. In the case of music, the person(s) who actually writes and performs the music owns it (unless they sell those rights to someone else, as is often the case). What you get when you buy a CD, or download a song, or for that matter buy a paperback or a poster, is a license for certain legally defined rights. In some cases (like a Creative Commons license) you may have substantial freedom to do what you like with the material, but in most cases, your rights are constrained. That's the way it's always been, and this is nothing new -- copyright has been around for a long time. There isn't anything really special about the digital era with regards to the principle of copyright -- the Internet just makes it easier to violate.

Funny, I don't remember signing a EULA when I bought my last Allman Brothers CD. But I respect what you're saying: "Unauthorized duplication is a violation of applicable laws," you'll find everywhere. I care not for piracy, I care more about Apple not being my only service provider when it comes to listening to purchased tracks. But they provide a good service, and I'll continue to use it.

If only people could work up a tenth of this kind of moral indignation over things that really matter, like poverty or racism. I despair that the only thing that seems to get geeks politically active is the threat that they won't be able to use their music illegally. It's sad, really.

You don't know me. Shame on you for treating everyone with an opinion as a troll. I can spread my critiques and indignation far and wide, that I assure you. Please apologize.

Greetings all. Long-time lurker here looking for some advice, suggestions & wild-ass guesses where applicable.

I'm looking to replace the original rev A iMac w/ a 700 MHz iBook w/ Airport (like the Ti, but too many other things are on this newlywed's plate to fork out that kinda dough). It will become the home machine for general purpose stuff: net, word processing, digital pic repository, music collection, etc. What we really want is the ability to do our general computing stuff w/o being forced to spend hours in the computer room of the house. The iBook really fits our needs to a 'T'.

Here's where it gets tricky. With the rumored all new iBooks coming out at MWNY are we better off waiting 4 months, or do we look to purchase mid-November as originally planned?

Pros to Nov. purchase: known entity (current iBook's an excellent machine), OS X + classic, potential price drop if Apple's clearing stock for new model roll-out.

Cons to Nov. purchase If 1/2 of the next gen iBook rumors are true (G4, 13" screen, 1 gig max ram, even sexier casing) I'm gonna be kicking myself for years to come.

Does anyone know when Jaguar will be pre-installed on all new Macs? This is also one of the reasons why I'm holding off buying an iBook now. I would've thought that Jobs would have announced in Paris that effective 9/10 all Macs would ship w/ Jag. Surely they're not waiting until MWNY to make Jag standard, are they?

Appreciate your patience & input. I'm sure these types of questions are asked all the time by newbies.

I still don't think that the two are that similar, although I do see what you're saying now. Robespierre became the French Revolution, whereas I think it's more that Apple Computers became Steve Jobs. Robespierre wouldn't do anything to compromise the Revolution, whereas Jobs has to do everything his way.

The Revolution was an ideology, so one could subscribe oneself to its inerrancy. Apple Computers is a company and has no ideology. Jobs cannot believe that Apple Computers is inerrant because Apple Computers is whatever he makes of it. Instead, Jobs, if he believes in the inerrancy of anything, believes in the inerrancy of himself.

EDIT: You know, I probably should mention that I haven't done French history since high school, so... If you have any comparisons of Apple Computers to, say, Eastern Europe between 500 and 1800 or the Byzantine Empire, I'd be much better at responding. :D

yummy, i love those years. hmm i cant think of any real comparisons between the byzantine empire and apple computers but wouldnt that be cool. i think apple has an ideology b/c of jobs. i miss the old commericals from apple that were all about doing great things and furthering human development....unfortunately all we get nowadays are the most redundant ipod commercials. what school do you go to?

    hmmmm byzantine empire....

The Mac version of Firefox is crap, I'm afraid to say. I keep on trying to get on with it, but can't. I've been using Firefox on Windows since version 0.5 in early when it was still called Phoenix. Think the Windows version is the best browser ever, on any platform. The Mac version just doesn't work.

Best Mac browser all round at the moment I'd say is Camino. I like Safari's interface and general snappiness, but it chokes with animated gifs, Java and Flash.

If/when Firefox gets Mac-ified (version 1.1 by Easter apparently) I'm in for good. Until then, I stand by what I said.

It looks like a substantial application development environment and the subscription seems reasonably-priced at $99.

How many Java developers on Mac OS X will bite? I'm interested...I just wish that Sun and IBM had talked first, developed a joint technology for development and allowed different GUI and features to implement on top of the same insides and plug-ins.

Do you think there will be a new powerbook (.13 g4 maybe?) at jan macworld if there is a speed bump/superdrive/who knows on nov5? Or is it one or the other. I'm planning on buying one early next year so I'd rather not buy one and find out a new generation is released 2 weeks later.

    Hi everyone,

just updated to X.4.2 and folding didn't work anymore. I use the dual script of mc68k. The only way I got folding going again is to type "start1" and "start2" in terminal. But when you do this, and close your terminal window, f@h also stops again! Therefore type "crontab -l". This restores F@H after a restart to start automatically.

being a techie, when i first saw amd come out with their new scheme, i didn't like it

then i saw some benchmarks and realized that in every case, amd was being conservative in their numbers

so when i see athlon xp 1800+, i can be sure that it will more than beat a 1.8 ghz pentium 4

i could also possibly see apple doing the same thing with their marketing concerning the speeds of their next generation machines...naming it the g5 1800+, or g5 2000+, etc.
