Well there are multiple parties to blame...the gamers who are so eager to get the last frame per second in speed they forget that they can't really see that many frames per second, and for that matter not demanding more processing speed and instead trying to demand more video processing speed. The programmers who are too reluctant to add altivec code to their programs when it would improve the speed of their software, and instead listen to the gamers and try to program for the favorite graphic cards used by gamers.
See if games were to use the CPU instead of the videocard and use Altivec anyone with G4s could take advantage of the higher speed Macs. As it is now, many games require specific graphic cards to even be optimized. With dozens of PCI graphic cards out there, can you imagine the headache programmers are going through to try and write API code for each potential graphics card out there? Why not just demand more Altivec based programming? Now that both the eMac and Flat Panel iMac offer Altivec, you can have your perfect Mac game machine in an $899 refurbished eMac.
You have 128 bit processing via vector processing o n the CPU...demand that your programmers program for it. It isn't like it can't be done. If Genentech can do Blast 5 times faster on a Mac than any PC, you can get your game 5 times faster if you just write enough angry letters to the programmers to get their act together. The G4s are powerful enough. You just aren't asking for power where it is already available.

Eeek that takes hours between formating and applying all the updates. Not to mention restoring your files and stuff like that.

Hah, the author thinks the software will become fast and usable and it will affect Apple's hardware sales.

Apple along with it's cpu partner('s) have been working on the next big CPU jump for quite some time. A few **YEARS** in fact. Nothing has changed. Where these people get the idea that stuff like a MAJOR CPU update happens in a 3 to 6 month windows are totally off the freaking beam. We are talking YEARS folks. CPUs and new motherboards are not whipped up in a weekend with 6 guys and a few cases of beer.
The next CPU Apple is going to use began it's life sometime in 2000 and yep the baking process is still going on...
I'm gonna shut up now since I don't want to say anything more but all of this FUD and cloak-n-dagger crap is getting pretty silly.
My last bit of adivice... The comment about Apple not going with the Power4 chip should not be taken as if it came down from God himself... And thats all I'm gonna say on that topic.

If Intel comes out with a sub 3000 dollar machine with 4.7 Ghz, I'm sorry Apple, but you had better get something better than what you have.
I'm not going to be a customer of a company that charges just as much for 1/4 of their competitors product.
Go ahead and flame me...I know that the Mhz of the G4 and P4 don't match up in performance, but there's too big of a speed gap for there to be any doubt in my mind of which is faster.

I just got back from the grand opening in Ardmore, PA - Suburban Square outdoor mall. I am pretty spoiled having 2 Apple stores close to me (4 miles to Suburban Square and 6 miles to King of Prussia mall store). I will say that the Suburban Square store is larger, more organized and has a lounge area with powerbook G4s. There were plenty of mac enthusiasts there - even some more hardcore than myself LOL. The design aesthetics of the outside are sweet, kinda like a mini Flagship store.
I've been to the Apple stores in Fashion Valley (San Diego), Towson, MD, SOHO and San Francisco. I applaud Apple for a great retail buying experience and a store that is a direct reflection of the essence of Apple.

Ah.. heh.. all internet traffic can be routed through a server of sorts that 'allows' and 'disallows' administrator specified sites. It's a great way to keep your kids from surfing porn, myspace, using AIM, crap like that.
It also does other things, like log where they've been, etc.

I think the issue of processor clock speed is moot. And if it ain't dead yet, it will be after the PowerPC970 becomes available. Let Intel continue to be the leader in that meaningless race. Who cares? The most powerful processors on the planet (Power4, Itanium) have lower clock speeds than a Pentium 4.
In two and a half years, I see Apple using processors built on the 9nm process that are faster and use less power, and improved battery technology that will allow laptops to run for eight hours doing the most power-consuming tasks. I see gpus becoming so powerful that 3-D desktops will be standard, even on laptops.
I see OSX, or whatever Apple will call its operating system in the future, to continue to make leaps and bounds ahead of Microsoft OS with more and more people switching to Macs and Linux.
I think wireless connectivity will become faster and more reliable and standard on every Mac, including peripherals.
And desktops, at least for the home, will become much smaller, similar to the Shuttle SS51G mini computer.

I've only been doing it since last month but the SMP simulations load you up with 1700+ pts per WU. I've just added my PS3 this week. By the end of next week I should be well within the top 200 on Team Macrumors.
I can only imagine what kind of damage could be done with a Mac Pro. Until they get around to updating them and I order mine, of course, and then I won't have to imagine anymore. :)

hey man, it will occasionally go down for a few days at a time, i am unsure why it does it. but it will come back on, just give it a few days. i have my computer set to download about 4days worth at a time so it still does work if the link is down.
Thanks! It's just a pain, because I tried last week, and I'm now trying again. I read something on the SETI@home page that said that Macs have been unable to get work units. Guess I'll just have to be patient.

All I've had to do is click "echo cancellation" in preferences, and the reception is clear as a bell between S.A. and mid west U.S. Skype hab been berry berry gude to me :)
