twillis, you have some good arguments, but I think you are missing the issue here.

Now I don't want to get into an argument here (I think forum arguments are a waste of the sites space.), but I do want to try and adress why I believe it is a bad idea for Apple to go x86.

Looking at where Apple's marketing is going, it is very obvious that they want to draw in the users that do not know much about computers or 'switchers.' By porting OS X to x86, they create two problems for themselves.

    1) It adds more choices to the purchase of a new Mac. Now to you and me, this sounds like a good thing, but to Mr. Joe Average it becomes overwhelming. The beauty of Apple's system is that they have a computer for everyone. The people that simply want a computer for the internet and email have the eMac. People that want a very good all in one computer have the iMac. Do you see where I am going here? Looking at prices, it is very easy to see what model is good for you (and please, let's not get into the price discussion. I know that Macs are more money, but we get what we pay for.)

This is very appealing to Mr. Joe Average. At CompUSA, I have no idea how anyone could choose a new computer. There are so many numbers buzzing around at different prices it is hard to believe that anyone could leave the store feeling satisfied with their decision. These people probably don't even know or care what SDRAM stands for, so Apple is out there making it easier for them.

    2) The people who would purchase one of these x86 macs would get one with the high numbers right? Well what happens when the get home only to realize that their computer is not as fast as the numbers claim it is? Are they going to feel angry at themselves for not picking the right computer? Probably not. In their minds, they made the correct choice. 800 Mhz vs. 2.4 Ghz, the 2.4 Ghz should be more than twice as fast as the 800 right? It should, but you and I know that it isn't. So the customer just had a bad experience buying a mac. How is that going to make them come back? Intel has already recieved a lot of heat regarding this issue and I would see it as VERY unwise for Apple to enter that stage.

Am I saying that everything is just peachy? No. I firmly believe that something has to be done to get Apple back on top of the speed race. I just don't see x86 as the answer. I just hope that IBM is making those new chips for Apple, that would certainly help.

I'm sorry, I'm probably boring you. And I don't mean to shut you down, I'm just stating my opinions about what the x86 chip means for Apple and I strongly disbelieve in it.

If any of you want to talk man to man, drop me an email at pworm420@earthlink.net or my iChat account is always open under AIM as pworm420. I'll be glad to talk to any Mac fan.

Mac Observer forum Hacked and Defaced?

I've been receiving spam from the Mac Observer forums.

Their dorum site appears to have been lightly defaced: "HaCKED BY eXpL01tEr Forum Index"

    Forum is down.

I hope I just didn't end up on another spammer's list.

Dang I hate Vandals! Dumbest form of crime.

Here is the content on the third spam email I've received within the last hour:

I'm not impressed by hackers. If they really want to impress me, they'd also have to tell us where they live.

Edit: Looks like everything is back to normal.

I think you need to take a long look at the world and consider what hackers have been able to do for YOU. Not all hackers go after a small website designed for a technical community. That's not the way to infamy (spell?). Most of it is political, monetary, or religious targets.

Most likely it was a common exploit and some script kiddy, instead of a real, bonafied hacker.

Champions League 06-07 on the 360 and 'Worms' on Xbox Live Arcade. Champions League is ace, really nice looking and the 'Ultimate team' mode now has me hooked its a reallllllly good and addictive idea.

Worms on Live, is good but lacking some of the great weapons you used to get on the PC. No Holy Hand Grenade or Concrete Donkey. Oh Well. Fun anyway.

    mmm 5.8 mediocre review. :o

    Closing Comments
When it comes to captivating casual gamers, control needs to be simple and intuitive, and the Cooking Mama franchise needs to evolve to do that. We could rant all day about what technically works and why 1:1 motion is important, but in the end it’s an issue of whether or not the game is fun, inviting, and entertaining. The overall consensus; it’s still a fun game, as long as you can ignore some of its faults. The inviting presentation will still bring people in, it’ll still be a blast for certain gamers, and the act of doing motion-controlled cooking pantomime will be a hit with the younger crowd and a niche group of gamers. At the same time, the series has a long way to go before it really “feels right” on Wii, and if nothing else Cooking Mama: Cook Off can act as that first step towards an inevitable improvement. We love the series, but we simply can’t endorse this one. Here’s hoping for a sequel that truly innovates around the controller, rather than borrowing from DS control.

    6.5 Presentation
The charming Cooking Mama look and feel hits Wii in full effect. New dishes, new preparation techniques, and a new vs. mode. Not bad.
    5.0 Graphics
The game has style, but it also has low-res food, a very basic look, and visuals comparable to DS. It in no way pushes the system. 480p and 16:9 supported though.
    5.5 Sound
Classic tunes and Cooking Mama “Engrish” throughout. It’s basic by design, but basic nonetheless.
    5.5 Gameplay
Some of the motions transition decently to Wii, while others are best kept on DS. The tactile feel is lost, and with it the game’s immersion. Vs. mode is a definite step in the right direction
    6.0 Lasting Appeal
There’s plenty to do, and the vs. mode is a plus, but there’s less pure entertainment in the act of making food with the Wii remote.
    5.8
    Mediocre OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Not out till May for Europeans I believe - was hoping this might be a game to keep the non-gamers happy for a while. I might get it still but 5.8 :(

Interesting, very interesting! Let's hope they also will bring out a version for the G5's. Also the folding on GPU's is coming quite well. Let's hope our electric bills don't go up when you have a dual/quad folding and two X1900 in SLI mode! :D

BTW Macaholic, how did you get sooooo much folding power?!? And are you folding for Team MR?!?

Didn't see that coming! No really, seems that nobody likes Excite Truck from what I've heard on the forums.

Music in Excite Truck is awful. But I suppose that's a premature judgement as I've only heard a single track on it, ever since day 1 I've been using a spare SD card loaded with MP3s. We Didn't Start the Fire and Tubthumping go very well with this :p and that strange Doctor Who/Holiday mix too...

I saw this posted earlier (can't find it easily now).

However, I'd trade the ability to own an iPod and use Google while young for a billionaire father any day. Seems like, sooner or later (sooner, given Ballmer's rotundness), you'd be able to buy all the iPods you wanted.
The advantage of having a billionaire father though is that in 15 years they're going to sue his arse off for mental trauma. All the kids in the playground are saying "Did you see that cool vid on Google?" or "Have you checked out the new iTunes Discovery Download?". Traumatic for a hip kid. Although if it's Ballmer's kids......:D

No, it's about time that they release iMovie 3. But that's beside the point. The point is, that Apple missed a chance to make another 'first.' I have a question though, is the sony a superdrive? I mean does it burn cds also. Sorry I don't have time right now to read the article.

Downloaded this last night and didn't even realize it was a major update. I don't see too many changes in the programs and everything is still running fine...A lot of times, Microsoft service packs fix things you weren't even aware were problems. A service pack like this one likely incorporates a lot of fixes already accepted as hotfixes for corporate customers... once they build up enough of them, or once a certain amount of time has passed, they lump all of the fixes into a single package and release it to everyone. Sometimes (but not often), service packs also introduce new functionality... Windows XP SP-2, for example, has a lot of new features in it in addition to correcting a lot of other problems.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the new Airport Extreme Base Station works fine with DS!

You may not be able to use WEP/WPA/WPA2 with it, though.

What I did (and usually do with wireless routers) is instead of turning on a security protocol, I enable Access Control and then add the MAC addresses of all devices that should be allowed to connect.

To do this with the Airport Utility, you'll first need to select the device in the main window, then choose the Base Station > Manual Setup option from the menubar.

The first section you should see will be the "Airport" category, which will be on the Summary tab. Choose the right-most tab labelled "Access Control".

Set "MAC Address Access Control" to "Timed Access"

By default you should only have one item listed in the table, "(default)" - this will need to be Edited with the limit set to "No Access" (this will ensure no devices can connect unless they are specifically in the list)

Now, click "+" to add a new entry to the list. This first item should be the computer you are using. There is a handy "This Computer" button that will get the MAC address of your computer automatically. Click it. Type in a Description, then click done.

Next, add another entry for you DS...

To get you DS MAC address, insert a Wi-Fi enabled game, and go to the Wi-Fi Settings option (I used Tetris DS). Go to Options > System Information. There you will see the MAC address of that DS.

Once you have finished adding all the MAC addresses that need access, click the "Update" button and wait for the changes to be saved and the router to be restarted.

Once done, there is one final step needed to get your DS online. You'll need to go to Wi-Fi Settings from within a game, and create a new connection. You should already know how to do this if you've used your DS online before. Just click an empty slot, and wait for the DS to find your network, then save. Done!

    Hope that helps someone!

I don't know why apple doesn't have this in any of the docs, but you can enable normal 128 or 40 bit WEB by holding the option key down when selecting the encryption type in the popup menu. It will disable wireless-N, but then the DS can connect securely.

    Thank you crocodile-man.

Right now Apple's not selling on speed or hardware, they're selling on software. That's what a lot of (but not all) of the switch ads are targeted at. The iApps.
You name me ANYTHING on the PC platform that even remotely compares to ANY of them and you can pry my PC from my cold dead fingers.

    ......waiting.........

    ......waiting.........

    ......waiting.........

    ..........still waiting........

    ...............................

oh what's that? You couldn't find any?
    Well that's a shame.
Guess I won't be buying a Mac cuz it's slower than PCs then.

I don't ******** care if Intel comes out with a 5Ghz PVI next year, it's not going to run OSX, it's going to run Pallidinium which is the computer equivilent to a $1500 paperweight.

Fine. Go buy a PC. Be happy with Windoze XP. Trust Microsoft. Update your computer with 57 secuity patches. Play music on a media player that spies on you. Have Microsoft activate DRM without your consent.

    Enjoy.

For running basic photo-processing stuff for family pix, and doing word processing and other general "computer stuff", a G3 is a great ass-kicker of a processor and for the price compared to the G4 product out there, it's a no-brainer. My 450MHz G3 is, even today, a remarkably capable machine. With nearly twice that power in the ibook's G3, you will surprise everyone if you run out of CPU power doing what it is you say you're buying the computer for; on the other hand, if you're planning on running Final Cut or something really intense like that, you may be better off buying a used G4 PowerBook if you don't want to pay premium for a new one.

By using Jon's tool, you KNOWINGLY and WILLINGLY are violating an agreement that you yourself agreed to.

And if you use an Apple or AOL ID, Apple knows who is violating the agreement.

Even if the current iTMS server protocol cannot distinguish between iTunes and PyMusique, it should be quite easy to figure out how to do that distinction once Apple has its own copy of PyMusique. Then Apple can go over its server logs and get a list of the people who have used PyMusique.

Use at your own risk (or use at least gift certificates...).

It would be touch screen and have voice recognition. I personally have an ibook and have to lug around the 6 lb dead weight everywhere I go. I much rather have something like a ditial clipboard that weighs only 2lbs. I'm not looking to play unreal on it, just work. I think PDA's suck because of the limited OS's and memory. This device could sinc up to your computer and immediatly transfer information, have built in 802.11b and bluetooth(slow anyway). I still see no downside. What makes an ibook better? The fact it has a keyboard? There are many protoype tablets with built in keyboards on the reverse side that can flip around to simulate a laptop. I still see more positives than negatives. On November 7th Microsoft will release all their tablets into the market, I guess we will have to wait and see what type of response it will have. Believe me Apple has made worse mistakes than the iTablet. Don't even get me started on the eMate.:o
