I can understand why people would think this is a good thing. But at the same time, there are consequences for Apple. Apple sells others peoples songs, if they thought that selling to Apple would mean that their songs could be immediately transfered to P2P outlets they would be reluctant to supply ITMS with any songs.

When it comes to picking ITMS over a different outlet, the amount of available content has a lot to do with it.

I am really curious about who is behind this new group. This software is a poison pill for ITMS, as far as label owners are concerned.

Steve was just in the news for sending an email claiming that a rivals software was easily hacked in order to bypass the restrictions in place to prevent downloaders from freely sharing the music they have purchased.

This smacks of corporate skullduggery at its worst.

On a positive note, it proves that Apple is the company to go after in this area.

On the other hand, Apple needs to step up and protect its interests in this area.

For some reason, 'PlaysForSure' keeps coming to mind.

My friend told me about a new Apple commercial he saw on TV at 2030 Eastern time. I just wanted to claim fame on these forums for being the first to know. There are 2 dudes, one who is mac and one who is windows, and it talks something about 8 bajillion viruses. And mac has none. It's part of a campaign. Who can be the first to find it on the internet? I want to see it myself...

Oh yeah the stores talk about them all the time in Texas and its a blast... but every Mac person I come accross outside the store... they act like we are talking politics and I want an explination to why they have voted or are a certain way...

FireFox for Windows is way, way better than IE, even in it's current Beta status.

Firefox for Mac, unfortunately, still looks like a Windows app - bummer.

Firefox at .6 was better then Internet Imploder at 6.0.

I've talked to multiple people about this and they seem to be missing the big picture and that is that FireFox may actually make web developers code to standards instead of MS's craptastic "standards" Which in the long run could very well mean that all web sites will work on Safari instead of the occasional hiccups.

I'm dead serious folks. Push FireFox to your friends as hard as possible. Tell them the install takes up less then 17MB on their system and if they don't like it they can simply uninstall it. Be sure to show them FireFox's themeing engine and extensions. These generation the most ahhhs and ooooos. Esp the adblocker extension. When I show them how easy it is to blow in site ads and get rid of annoying flash ads I've had atleast 3 people jump on FF right then and there.
If we can get FF to comprise 30% of web browsers web developers are going to have to take notice. Even the 18% that is now being reported by some sites is nothing to sneeze at.

I'm sure the new DP 867 Macs are wonderful - in fact I think all the current hardware range is great. It's just that Uncle Steve wants everyone over to OSX, yet some of the machines are still coming with only 128mb (iBooks) which only just enough for OSX let alone any serious software (Warcraft 3 would choke). And 256mb in a professional level DP tower is just daft, Photoshop will eat that just by starting up.

What I don't like is the fact that it's made out to be some sort of favour, when you should not really have to upgrade something as fundemantal as RAM the moment you buy the machine.

The offers not even available in UK (where I am) anyway.

Now I agree with you. That is why you should buy from a vender that offers free ram and charges no tax. That is how we small resellers can still stay alive because we can give away ram as an incentive.

Hey Multimedia! Thanks for the props! Nice to see you are spreading the word. Oh, and we are in Alabama ;)

You are correct that smaller distances allow the signals to get where they are going faster, but the idea with a clocked processor is that everything happens at the clock, so even if the data is waiting to go, the execution units don't operate until their signal to do so. To take advantage of the shorter distances, the chip makers increase the clock speed, which is to say shorten the time between clocks, so that data is showing up just in time again.

The reason why some chips cannot clock as high as others is that errors in the manuafacturing can cause signals to propagate a bit more slowly, signals to be less clear, switches to take longer, and so on. These errors don't make operation impossible, it just takes longer for the parts to work correctly, and so clock speed is lowered until everything is in proper lockstep.

A processor is a bit like a well trained army doing a march. It would be a truely facinating visual if someone could make a screensaver or whatever that showed a simple device at work, signals propagating, states changing. :) Ooooo.

Hey, thanks for going through this with me. I was trying to be stubborn I was just stating what I thought I knew. If you know better that may be. It does certainly sound like you have the training.

In the future to help you with your responses to shorten the number of times you have to go back in forth it helps to explain in detail what you mean as you did in this last response.

    Again thanks.:)

Continuing the assumption that we'll see a 1 gig and, say a 933 lower-end (personally, I think it'll be more likely a 1gig/800M line), how low do you expect the 800M's to drop where/if they're still available? How about the 667's if there's no 933 and/or if the new line is 933/800?

As a point of reference, I bought my 450 G3 powermac about a week after the G4's came out and its price had dropped from $3499 down to $1800 in that time b/c it was totally replaced (obviously).

Since I haven't really followed these post-new-product-introduction price fluctuations in replaced/newly-outdated product, I'm interested to hear from anyone who has, or who can speak intelligently based on other recent-past product introductions/replacements by Apple. My feeling is that prices of the replaced product are no longer dropping as much as it used to, for whatever reason, but I'm not well-informed. Buying a new 1gig would be nice, but if it's going to be a dinosaur in 8 mos when a new processor/significantly upgraded device may be released, I'd be more inclined to save the quid and go with an "obsolete" 667 or 800 instead... I mean, for Logic Audio and Office.x, how much of an impact will an upgraded Radeon video chip make anyway, right?

    Thanks for your thoughts,

    vixapphire

(before anyone starts flaming, "dinosaur" is only a figure of speech, o.k.? no reason to have an aneurysm over it).

I could've sworn a Mac employee told me the next version Office was going to be completely universal, every copy working on Intel Mac and PC. He called it either "Office X" or "Office 12." I think it was Office 12.

But I've been trying to force myself to use Pages lately anyway.

    Daniel.

The next office, for macs, is universal; but that means it'll run on Power PC architecture as well as Intel architecture - both on Mac OS X...there will be different versions between the Windows and Mac computers, however.

Oh, by the way, the codename for the next Office for Windows was Office 12; it will, however, be officially called "Office 2007"

Power4 May Give Insight into Next-Generation Apple CPU
by Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
    October 10th 2002

IBM next week will provide a preview of its 64-bit Power4 processor. Designed for both desktops and entry-level servers, the new PowerPC chip could find its way into Apple desktops sometime in the future, according to a report in the EETimes.

The Power4 will be the first IBM PowerPC processor which incorporates Motorola's AltiVec instruction set, which has long been a feature of the Motorola G4s used in Apple's Power Macs, PowerBooks, flat-panel iMacs and eMacs.

IBM will detail the chip at the Microprocessor Forum, running October 14-17. According to the report EETimes, the chip will support extensions which will provide compatibility with PowerPC architecture, with backward-compatibility with 32-bit environments. Commentators in the article argue that this will ensure compatibility with the Mac OS.

"Apple would have to be crazy not to use this part," Peter Glaskowsky. editor-in-chief of The Microprocessor Report, the forum's host, said to EETimes.

However, there are obstacles to the Power4's use: Apple would need to invest significant time in OS development to support a 64-bit environment. Moreover, software developers would need to rework their applications to take full advantage of the chip.

The upsides, should Apple decide to adopt the Power4, include a superscalar pipeline and symmetric multiprocessing.

Analysis: Jobs has had a sneak preview of the PowerPC roadmap that we aren't privileged to, but it's safe to say he's happy with the 'options'. The work needed to rework OS X to get the best performance out of the Power4 may take considerable time and investment; however, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Apple could implement the Power4 and use the existing 32-bit architecture in its boxes. It's been done before and they're doing it now: the current PM G4s are a case in point, employing processors which cannot take full advantage of DDR.

Similarly, Apple has pulled such stunts in the past, with some deplorable, half-baked Performas. Power4 - like the early PM G4/350 - might give Apple the marketing edge it sorely needs while it competes with the next-generation Intel/AMD chips. To be able to use Power4 in a 32-bit environment while it waits for the OS to catch up may prove a temptation for Apple that is too great to ignore.

You read correctly, there is no G5 build here (http://homepage.mac.com/ozjason/moz/).

After backing up library files I gave them both a whirl; YMMV but I found the Firefox G4 build to be subpar, ie, not working. I have reverted to the original krmathis build - fox-around-the-apple.

The Thunderbird build is a different beast altogether, on my 7447A load times, and searching of my admittedly huge mailbox archives were both dramatically cut... Which is good, I mean, it couldn't really get much slower, could it?

I don't think it's exactly a hoax--some people at MOSR (often wrong, but probably not flat-out lying) have the beta and are testing it. It doesn't work--it's probably vapor for now, and always may be--but it does exist. That's different from a hoax. AND the problems getting it to run are supposedly very similar to the ones for PearPC.

All in all I think they are using PearPC but denying it. Not something that would make me want to do business--but I won't condemn them without final proof.

So I don't think it's a hoax, but nor does it seem to be a current and viable product.

Sorry...didn't mean to nip at you. I'm relaxed now...cool, calm, collected crab. :D

I just didn't understand why you wouldn't accept what was on Apple's site...their own answer to the direct question "What is Apple's mission statement?"

I just get a little frustrated when it seems like posts go unread (not just mine...anyone's).

The link you posted didn't look like it was from Apple's site (the address, anyway), and the place I got mine looked exactly the same (though it had different words). Also, mine sounded a lot more like a mission statement than the one you posted (which sounded like just them bragging). But yeah, you seem like a much more relaxed crab, so it's all good. :D
