to those guys: BUY A PC - just don't come crying when it doesn't work!

Why is it every time someone says they want Macs to be faster, they are Crybabies? We like the OS, the iApps, the Design. etc. Why is it so wrong to want faster processors? Like it or not, PCs are the competition. OS X is great, but when you can build a PC for less than the cheapest Mac, that's faster at a lot of things than the fastest Mac, there is a problem. For those of us who do things that need as much speed as possible, and are on a budget, most of the current Apple offerings are good enough.

That being said, if by the time I'm ready to buy my new Mac (and I will be getting a new Mac, I like OS X enough to want one. And video-editing may be slower, but it's a pain in the *** on the PC), if it's close enough feature, performance, and price wise to a comparitive WinTel, I'll be happy. Most of the current offerings are enough for most users, but some of us need as much speed as we can get.

I just hope they don't have to go Intel to do it.

But if they did, can you imagine running OS X on a home built PC. Good bye the nightmare that is Windows 2000. I think most people are like I am. Hate M$, love Apple software. Tolerate Intel/AMD hardware, hate Motorola. Give us some real IBM compatibles.

Despite my current objections, I still have hope.

I remember when the nano was released. On News24, 10 mins after Job's showed the world, they had one in the studio showing people the new iPod.

Probably helped that Apple have started using a BBC studio as their Euro base for transatlantic announcements for journos with demo units there... Presumably someone just had to kidnap the Nano and take it down the corridor

It's been down at least 90 minutes. I have a work experience Design Student jumping up and down to find out what's happening. She's desperately hoping for an updated, cheaper, pink (?) Powerbook  Whatever!

    you've got a design gimp??? :p

[I edit my message saying "Would someone post a link to my first post reading something like "KC's Introduction"?". Spoiler John hasn't edited his post yet.] :p :D

If you post from home and never mention you're an Apple employee on the forums or tell your co-workers that you post, I don't see how Apple could find out.

Yeah, but do you really want to risk a paying job, just to post on an internet forum?

    Check this out:

Make sure you watch the demo video. Basically, they're taking video equipped mobile phones and making them capable of transmitting video for live webcasts to huge audiences. Really great idea!

Sorry about the thread jack, but I'm looking into hooking a mini up to my TV. I don't have DVI on my TV, so I was thinking about getting the adapter that Apple sells and just going the component or S-Video route. Is this the approach you used? Does it look good enough for games/video/etc.?

Oh, yeah - this is a really cool plug in. I'm not usually a plug-in kind of guy, but this one I like. Makes for a great contest to see who can spin it the fastest.

. . .Apple bought out El Gato Software, which makes EyeTV? This would be another entertainment acquisition for Apple and would allow Apple to extend the digital hub to the television and VCR. Apple could make their own "iTV" software for Mac OS X to be used in conjunction with the EyeTV TV tuner or an actual television. They could add RF and RCA inputs to the back of new computer systems that would allow to hook up your TV, VCR, and even a cable box to your Mac; you could also hook up the EyeTV TV tuner to your Mac through USB. You could then do everything that EyeTV can do and possibly more.

Would this actually work? What might be the advantages and disadvantages? Do you think it's a great idea?!?! :) :D

EDIT: BTW, this is not a "What would the world be like. . ." thread. It is a thread about Apple and EyeTV. Don't be a "fool" like 'mymemory' was below!

I'm a potential "switcher" that wants to buy an iMac now but I keep reading all the posts on the various Mac boards about how even the latest 17 inch iMac looks "choppy" or "jerky" when resizing or moving windows and how much slower browsing the Web is than bad old MS on Wintel.

I'm so bored reading all the MHz doesn't matter blather. It does matter. When a brand new $2000 computer looks choppy using a brand new OS, then something is not right. It should be blazing on all basic functions. Flame away if you like, I see a lot of that on the Mac boards whenever someone happens to disagree with the party line but I'd wager I speak for a lot of potential switchers.

I guess what really blows me away is that Apple appears to be *purposely* cripppling their systems. From what I understand it's possible for Apple to upgrade the processor, bus, memory and other components without any technical difficulties.

Okay, you can flame away now -- but all I'm saying is there are a lot of potential switchers waiting to plunk down their hard earned cash if Apple would get it together. I see more and more Apple folks waking up, no longer satisfied to let Apple off the hook for getting further and further behind the rest of the computer world.

The best OS deserves the best hardware or at least a lot better hardware than being currently used. You want premium prices? Then give us premium hardware. Geez, drop Motorola if they can't deliver the goods and go with IBM (don't go with Intel or AMD to keep that Apple distinction). But pul-leeze do it soon. I want to buy!

Macosrumors stated that "If you think the 23-inch Cinema HD Display is big, try a 30-inch model! Apple is planning extremely large displays with this resolution and perhaps even an enhanced one in the 30-inch version. It could be up to a year before we see the two monster screens Apple is working on, but the first of them might come at any time. In the near term, widescreen 17 and perhaps 19-inch displays are due in advance of the holidays."

I dont take much of what they say seriously, but a 30 widescreen would be something to look at.
They also mention a new digital-lifestyle device "several new Macs and at least one new Digital Lifestyle device will feature 800Mbps FW" and "Expect a whole lot more software and hardware hitting the market not only from Apple but from third parties as well based on the new Rendezvous auto-configuration technology that was introduced with OS X 10.2 Jaguar. The new Digital Lifestyle devices are said to enable several nifty new features of this technology including automatic file exhange between the device and computer(s) "subscribed" to the device"

what do you guys imagine the new device could be?

I dunno . . . maybe my need for "office" applications is not as serious as other folks, but why would an average Mac OS X user need 'M$ Office' when something like 'OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/)' is available?
Document interchange still needs work. If I'm modifying an Office file for a customer, the formatting needs to be intact when I return it. OOo can't reliably provide that yet.

Scroll down to see some examples, then click on the link on the bottom to see more examples (Part IV, V, etc.). This should help you out.Button faces don't change in either Firefox or Safari, and in safari the input field backgrounds aren't even what is set (which does work in Firefox).

I did the term NHL. I can't believe it, Canada is 1 obviously but the US is 7?! There are 5 countries that don't even have the NHL whose citizens are searching for NHL more than the US. :(

Does anyone suspect that Apple might pull a wildcard on us in a few days with a brand new PowerBook? New enclosure, portable SuperDrive, faster bus?

Surfing the current TiBook webpages made me realize how outdated they were (still touting the 5 Gig iPod, for instance, in the OfflineRT page for FCP) and we all know that the PowerBook is the last Apple product to boast their new identity typeface (Myriad) ... I'm just hoping that the Keynote address at Seybold includes and introduction to Apple's newest pro-level notebook.

    Wishful thinking, perhaps.

What if Intel just quit. They said they were done making chips. Would the world end?

OR, what if they drastically cut production so that prices on the rare chips skyrocketed? Could they get in trouble with the government like Microsoft does? Interesting concept...

Bit of a stupid concept. No offense.

So Intel, who I'm guessing are worth a few billion $, are just going to pack up shop. Pay their staff, then ta-ta.

Not sell the company, sell the chips, sell the factories, just, Bye Bye?

If Intel were going to ''quit'' they would sell the company, and I'm sure there isn't just one person behind these decisions, there must be a whole board.

They could also let enother company come in, run it all, and just use the Intel name.

    Sheesh.. the idea's people have!

Ahhh, thanks guys! Didn't know that I was soooo inspiring! So the sentece underneath every post that I made has inspired a couple of you and dared you to fold. I'm glad that it worked, now I can retire! NOT!! I will catch you guys some day, but first I'll need to come up with a battling plan!

Well, you could start by folding for me and help me get to a million. Then we'll switch to Dreadnought and contribute to your account. Otherwise you'll be waiting about two years for my points.

You might think it a joke, but your sig has probably inspired more people than you think. Daring someone to do something is usually a pretty good way to encourage others to take you up on it. It's kind of like seeing high scores posted on a video game. You just have to get the top score! I'd be willing to bet that people seeing your sig have been made more curious than any of the other folding related ones.

And despite the ribbing I've given you and being several hundred thousand points ahead of you, you're still (in my mind) one of the top folders and "team leaders" if you will. Always active, always ready to talk trash, and always encouraging others to join.

Making a computer obsolete is a bit harder these days. My G4/400 is 3 years old. It was the low-end tower at the time and it's server admirably as my main work horse. It's getting put to pasture in a week or so when my dual 867 gets here (my wife is getting it). If you're looking to run FCP 3 with all the latest filters then you probably are more inclined to get a faster computer than most people.

Shoot, in a year or so when G4 upgrades come down in price I"ll probably pick up whatever I can get 2-300 bucks and give it some more life.
