I haven't seen anything mentioned here as a decent game that's not also available in Japan. All they sell here are the Jap imports and they have all the "names" mentioned here...plus the Pokemon game everyone's on "pins and needles" for :p

FF6, since that's the only Final Fantasy game I've actually played :o

I never owned any of the Sony, Sega, or Microsoft consoles - only Nintendo consoles. I missed out on all the post-FF6 games anyway. Not that I mind, as I prefer something else over Final Fantasy for my RPG needs :p

It was on the apple website when the xserver was first shipped... they took it off after a day or so.. it was still in early dev. It's a 2GB Firbre channel Disk array... im guessing that it has hardware RAID and some kind of chashing system.

I joined!!!! I couldnt get the terminal version to work, not that I tried hard, but it was frusterating and the directions seemed outdated for the console version so I downloaded the GUI and joined the MR team. WOOT WOOT. You guys should get the word out to more people, I had heard of things like this but never knew we did it and that it was a simple process to do.

Okay... maybe this will help end this overclock issue.

When a target speed is hit and chips come off the line one of 4 things will happen with a given chip.

1 - BAD CHIP goes on the junk pile (this is what drives up the price on 'good' chips.
2 - GOOD CHIP @ SPECd SPEED (okay thats fine)
3 - GOOD CHIP below SPECd SPEED (move that to the slower chip pile)
4 - GOOD CHIP above SPECd SPEED (this can happen)

Now in the past those 'better than spec' chips were just thrown into the pile with the rest of the 'just spec' chips but there is nothing from stopping MOT from putting those chips in an 'over spec' pile (only makes sence if there are a good number of over spec chips to begin with) and re-rate them as 1.25Ghz CPUs.

Is it overclocking? I dunno... I know it is when 'joe hacker' OCs a CPU it is since JH is just 'guessing' how far he/she can push a CPU but if MOT has the kind of equipment required to really test the chip to make sure it's okay running at that speed then I'm not sure I'd call it overclocking.

Its all how you look at it...

At Pascack Hills, I have been on computers running NT4 and Windoze 2000, and both have *rarely* crashed on me. However, it's not common for me to see OS X crash on me. Even when I had 10.1 on my iMac 233 for a short time, it did not crash one time.

My point is that as stable as the Windoze OS is, as you point out, OS X, simply put, is even more stable. Although there are some issues with hardware, usually, that's with upgraded hardware, the OS performs very well under the power of the G4.

I have also heard about XP not crashing as much as the previous OSs. So I'll say it as it is: The Windoze OS is improving, but incremently closer to perfect. If an error pops up, at least explain what should be done about.

i will be installing 31 3.6GHz P4 with HT next week

all will have 2 folding processes on them with 2 seperate machine IDs

my little contribution. hopefully they are not too loud/hot or i may have to scale back. don't want the machines to die if the AC goes out. should make me #2 for the team output and hopefully give the team a little boost. small output by a large number of people is better in the long run though

May i ask how you come across so many computers, are you in it or something? Because thats alot of folding

I was walking past the Chanel shop in South Kensington last night and spotted that they've got two iMacs in their window showing various Chanel slidewhows

But the iMacs are silver rather than white - and have a Chanel logo on the 'chin' rather than the Apple logo. I'm assuming that they may have been colour-wared or just professionally sprayed since they look like the silver is 'supposed' to be there.

I'll try to get a picture when I next pass that way - but has anyone else spotted them in any other Chanel store?

I don't know why but you reminded me that I really want a Mac Mini :(

Email, faxes, instant messages, documents, and alerts pop on and off automatically, but are controlled by the user. Because there is so much screen landscape, the desktop doesn't have a cluttered feeling.

They pop up automatically, but are controlled by the user? Like pop-up ad's? Bad idea if you ask me. I like the notifications in the dock with iChat and Mail. The icon changes, and they can make a sound whenever a new message is received.

As for that much screen landscape, I think it would be hard to control that much space. If you needed it for really big spreadsheets or for tons of tools for designing or creating videos, I can understand, but having to lift the mouse up 5 times just to get from one side of the screen to the other, and turning your head 45 to view the whole thing seems a bit over-done.

Apple is making widescreen standard. Unfortunately, in a bizarre move, microsoft seems to be taking Apple on with the whole wide-screen thing, and they seem to be going over-board. I wonder if they will give you coupons for free neck adjustments at your local chiropractor?

Oh well. In 5 years, I'll probably still be using a Mac...

Personally I think that all the napster bashing is pretty sick.. The more competition, the better. I hate all monopolies, I don't care if it is a stylish monopoly.

Bah, maybe someday there will be a music download service that doesn't lock me in on their platform, that doesn't restrict me what I can do with _MY_ music, that gives me high quality music! A service that doesn't suck to put it bluntly. When we get there, it will be thanks to plain old competition in a free market. Nothing else.

But that's just it. This new Napster service gets us no closer to that ideal. In fact, it's a step backward.

    http://www.physics2005.org/events/einsteinathome/index.html

    What is Einstein@Home?

The screensavers are being developed for Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.

Albert Einstein discovered long ago that we are adrift in a universe filled with waves from space. Colliding black holes, collapsing stars, and spinning pulsars create ripples in the fabric of space and time that subtly distort the world around us. These gravitational waves have eluded scientists for nearly a century. Exciting new experiments will let them catch the waves in action and open a whole new window on the universe - but they need your help to do it!

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from rapidly rotating neutron stars, known as pulsars. Scientists believe that some pulsars may not be perfectly spherical, and if so, they should emit characteristic gravitational waves, which LIGO and GEO 600 will begin to detect in coming months.

    http://www.physics2005.org/

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space and time produced by events in our galaxy and throughout universe, such as black hole collisions, shockwaves from the cores of exploding supernovas, and rotating pulsars. These ripples in the space-time fabric travel toward Earth, bringing with them information about their origins, as well as invaluable clues to the nature of gravity.

Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity, but only now in the 21st Century has technology advanced enough for scientists to detect and study them. Although gravitational waves have not yet been detected directly, their influence on a binary pulsar (two neutron stars orbiting each other) has been measured accurately, and was found to be in good agreement with original predictions. Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies in this field.

Happy to oblige - you're talking rubbish.

Try a thought exercise - what precisely do you mean by the phrase "overclocked"?

You're the first person mentioning flames I've seen here. Perhaps you can provide your examples for general discussion?

And while the flow is going - the laws of physics don't care much about whether it seems reasonable to generate lots of heat or not. Think about the Cray "sofa" machines from years ago. They had freon and water cooling, but they weren't "overclocked".

Personally I think apple have got to give the ipod an mp3 encoder so that it can record both from internal and external microphones. It's one of the main things that for all the talk of a digital lifestyle it's actually quite difficult to get some thing that will do this for you on a mac.
Yes there's archos but most manufacturers don't seem to have heard of macs when it comes to the digital recording of sound.

there's loads more than 1 fw card reader here in the UK.

I have been pessimistic about the IBM Power4 chip from the very start. This is very much what I have been thinking. I think however that Apple has something big up there sleeve and no one should be disappointed by Apple not using this chip.

Just know a general sense of Apple, its computers, and its software. Beaware of the company you are working for i.e. how passionate Mac users and Apple itself can be about the products they bring.

In the application though it does ask something about being 18. I dont remember what though (no I'm not an employee just speaking from the jobs i've gone through).

I believe your best bet would be not even knowledge of the products but just how you portray your love for macs. Everything else can be picked up on the way, but a true and genuine love for the company that is able to spread to its customers will be your way in.

its even on Version Tracker (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25287)
But, of course, with no feedback, as of when I checked.

Edit: VPC7 is, what, $100 more? For once, I'd say it's worth it. Yes, the VPC versions that include Windows cost even more, but I'm assuming you've got your own licensed version, since you'd need one for this as well.

But there's even worse news in the article at the bottom.

The estimated SPEC INT and SPEC FP numbers (937 and 1051) would allow the 970 to clearly dominate the desktop scene were it released tomorrow, but by the time we see this chip in a shipping system the performance landscape will look significantly different in both the 32-bit (P4 at 4GHz+ with SMT) and 64-bit (AMD's Hammer) desktop markets. I won't try to predict exactly how it will stack up to the x86 and x86-64 offerings in late 2003/early but when it finally ships the 970 certainly won't spanking anything from Intel or AMD in the SPEC benchmarks. It should, however, enable Apple to avoid the kind of overpriced embarrassment (from a hardware perspective, at least) that is their current "pro" desktop line. And in fact a dual- or quad-970 system could potentially compare quite nicely in terms of price/performance to a single-processor Prescott or Hammer machine.

Is Apple going to shoot itself in the foot again?!?! This is not acceptable, if they have the thing available, use it. Damn, and damn again....
