Update: Both drives are not only announced (at least in Asia), but shown. To quote Macnn:

I think it is true that this place has changed, and I actually remember reading this thread when it was first posted; however I had only been a member for 8 months or so, so I really had no idea what people were talking about. I registered right after the TiBooks were revised to D, (bemoaning how my computer had become obsolete in three months). In those halcyon days, it seemed there were fewer regulars, but they always had something to say. When a new product was announced, it was possible to post a comment in the forum thread without it immediately disappearing in a sea of similar comments that would hit 400 posts in hours.
This forum is still evolving, and the moderation remains excellent; I don't think there is any escaping the effect of the number of members has on community though.

My reason was the competiveness of folding, and the taunting. Love that! Also, I started with folding on my G3 B&W and that wasn't fast enough, so I had a good reason to upgrade to a dual G5 :D

It has a hardware scaler, they released it to developers in January as a new SDK. They said DVD upscaling in a firmware update, but guessing when thats going to be has proved to be about as elusive as predicting the new powerbook G5 ;) Next Thursday im sure :p

an external would be a great choice for the majority of powerbook g3,g4, imac g3,g4, emacg4, powermac g3 g4. already and use and those not sold yet. why let 3rd party suppliers like formac make all the money and if a copy of idvd is included and compatability with dvd pro also. this would be a huge seller if apple branded and supported for between 299-349. it would add to apples bottom line like the ipod. if the looks are stunning and apple adds windows capability i can see the profits. I for one would by one. and when they get it small enough for the titanium they can put it in the topline one. while still giving all the ibooks, and powerbooks without one an external option. great for dubbing and can get its power from the firewire bus. Hook up an ipod to it for istant burn of 4.7 Gigabyte of mp3 files

I once bought an iBook from CompUSA that I later found out had been a display model. It came loaded with 700 songs (quite good ones actually). Then I had to re-install the OS and I thought that the songs had been included by Apple from the factory--I called and asked them where they were, and they said they had never sold a computer preloaded with songs, so I am pretty sure looking back on it, and remembering some of the other odd circumstances of the purchase, that CompUSA had not been forthcoming that I was buying a display model.

Ubuntu is the way to go! It's Debian based, which means GREAT apt-get support. If you don't know what apt-get is, it's basically a fast, stable, easy way to install packages. It even downloads it for you. From my experience, it's fairly light-weight as well. http://www.ubuntu.com/
