A more interesting question is: Has anyone received an email from teh Steve?
    Yes, more than one. :D

I suspect, a couple were from underlings who signed his name. That happens all the time in big business/government. The individual themselves simply do not have the time to sort through every message.

However, if it is a certain type of message/content, then it will get elevated to the actual person.

But a couple, were from him. No doubt. One related to the Newton and one related to another issue.

...and no, I will not share the address that I used to contact him. Sorry.

Amen to that! I wonder, the new dual duallies (or dual quads), do they have two or four (four or eight for the quads) WU's at a time? Or can one duallie do one WU and are both processors on one chip working on the same WU?

Albeit in unknown production quantities. Wonder what happened to that. Could that be coming in our next iBooks?

The real question, and we probably won't know the answer for a couple years, is when will we see our first OLED laptops?

OLED, Organic Light Emitting Diodes has the amazing capability of being able to fold the screen itself and be thinner and cheaper than LCDs to produce in the long run. Only trouble is, not enough people are making them. Unless Apple has a skunkworks project with OLEDs nobody knows about!

I love the iBook but it is definately not cheaper than the iMac in Australia. I have looked around and it, (the iBook) seems to be about $500AUD dearer than anywhere else, exchange rate adjusted.

    A basic iBook costs $2795 and thats with G3 600 + 20GB + 12"TFT + 128MB + CDROM, while an iMac basic costs $2595 with G4 700 + 40GB + 15"TFT + GeForceMX + CD-RW + 128MB. This has got to change apple!!!

Yep, the darn things are even put together closer by than the US.

But don't old your breath. Apple Aus has never been good value (for price or service) and this will not change in a hurry

what people tend to forget is pay is based on cost of living. In the US for example cost of living is pretty high compared to the rest of the world. Same goes for any of the delepot countries.

In those place you have to look at how safe is the work place, What is the cost of living there. And come on housing and food take up half is not more of most people income any how.

Seconded. The article [conveniently] neglects to mention several useful pieces of information:

    1) What is the average wage for workers in similar jobs?
    2) How does item 1 compare to the average standard of living there?
    3) What do these workers have in the way of monthly expenses (rent, food, utilities, health care, transportation, etc)?
    4) How much disposable income does this leave?

It's really difficult to look at this and say "golly, they're only making $50 a month - they must all be destitute" when we don't know how the economy scales there. In fact, it's not always easy to compare standards of living in different regions of the same country. Example - my former roomate's sister was astounded that $700 a month here can get you a fairly nice 3/2 house (the sister lives out on the west coast...$700 would barely get a studio apartment there).

Sorry about the thread jack, but I'm looking into hooking a mini up to my TV. I don't have DVI on my TV, so I was thinking about getting the adapter that Apple sells and just going the component or S-Video route. Is this the approach you used? Does it look good enough for games/video/etc.?

Oh, yeah - this is a really cool plug in. I'm not usually a plug-in kind of guy, but this one I like. Makes for a great contest to see who can spin it the fastest.

Can you explain to me how it works that a non existent domain diverts to an auction company, and also how come that a check on the domain shows it as 'taken'?IIRC, Network Solutions was caught running a similar scam. Any prospective domain name entered into the search gets registered to the search company. Then the search shows that the domain name has been claimed. The person conducting the search is asked to pay the owner of the name for the rights to it.

Okay this post made little since. What are you talking about 700? Also 512KB L2 is twice what all the new macs have. You may be thinking of L3 Cache which is 1MB on the Dual Ghz/867 and 2MB on the Dual 1.25.

Also he never referred to 800Mhz with any Powermac. Please be more explanatory with your posts. Short abbreviated sentences do not make since to any one but you.

All in all, its still a deal and should get many people to consider buying an Apple from Apple. But I'm more curious as to why they're doing it - trying to get rid of stock? Or is it more of a holiday special?

Panic Software (www.panic.com (http://www.panic.com/)) gets my vote. I think their software is great and the company seems young and fun too - seems to reflect the general mac user base very well..!

Why wait, I mean if a new iBook comes out, then sell the one you have (EBAY ASAO) and buy the new one. I have always been able to maintain a top machine by doing this. I will even sell you or anyone else my airport card out of my 933 for 60 bucks. It has never been used. as I dont use my desktop as a portable, haha

Replace the hard drive with Smartcard or similar media of the same size. Hard disk spinning is the slowest part of the iPod and similar MP3 players. Of course that would make it prohibitively expensive if it had the same storage capacity.

128 MB Smartmedia down to $40
by that logic, it would cost $7000 to make an iPod based on solid state memory and has 20 GB capacity!

It's good for the electric companies! 280 - 380 Watts for 24/7, I would leave it on only if you make your own energy (windmill, solar, nuclear) and plenty of it.There's a chart over at IGN breaking down cost per kilowatt hour by state.

    Hi all,

I recently got a new computer at work with a core 2 duo proc. Unfortunately we do everything with Windows at work. I'm already running the single core version of the no-nonsense text console. How can I use both cores/have two instances of F@H running? I've always been a Mac guy, so don't know a lot about Windows (because it really annoys me!!), so please walk me through this installation! BTW, I'm using XP on this pc.

    Best regards, Dreadnought

P.s. I'm back folding 24/7 (with the pc@work) and claim back my position in the top 50. So look out 4JNA, Atszyman and Redeye

wasn't it Mr. Gate investment in Apple that prevent them from going bankrupt?

In a word, no. In two words, hell no.

Why this bit of mythology persists, I'll never understand.

I do. When I lived in the UK I did not buy from Asda (UK arm of Wal-Mart), I own nothing from Nike. As for Disney, I was unaware of the situation, but generally avoid them for other reasons.

Actually, some people would cite Nike as a success story for the "No Logo" generation (Nike was a major target of that book, along with Disney). Since then, Nike has, to their credit (I don't often give multinationals credit) made a lot of moves to improve the standards in the factories that manufacture their products. Fifteen years ago, no multinationals would have employed a "Community-Relations Director" or whatever to look over how people percieve the ethics of their company. Of course, the flip side of this is that they're only concerned with how the consumer percieves their manufacturing standards - not with what those manufacturing standards actually are. So Nike and co could just be conning us into believing that they've improved the conditions in their factories, much like political parties spin their way into making anything positive.

I personally think the way forward is to put pressure on international and national governmental institutions (UN, EU, NAFTA (if its still called that), etc), those with actually legislative power, to pass directives prohibiting the sale of goods in which have not been manufactured in conditions which can be guaranteed to be humane. A universal living wage, I suppose would be part of that. Even though the biggest multinationals are now more powerful than some nation-states, I think that targeting individual corporations misses the point for three reasons:
    1) It isn't just the big multinationals that are employing (either directly or indirectly) slave-labour - its also the unbranded, cheap clothing that you'll buy in street markets. If we concentrate on Nike, GAP, Disney, we're missing a huge player in the perpetuity of slave-labour.
    2) Whilst we focus all our efforts on one corporation, another may get away scot-free. Look at all the bad press that has surrounded McDonalds in recent years. Now McDonalds has made credible efforts to make its menu healthier, Burger King, KFC and co have escaped with very little blemishes on their name.
    3) There isn't enough information imparted to the consumer to allow us to actually direct our efforts in the right direction anyway. When I buy clothing from H&M or whereever, it says "Made in Sri Lanka" on the label. I have no idea how that was made. I don't want to stop buying clothes made in Sri Lanka based on a prejudice that all manufacturing in the third world is done under terrible conditions. If we all did that, then there'd just be greater destitution in those areas as everyone stops buying products made in that area.

I guess my ideas stem from the belief that the state is still the bastion of political power - the way through which the people should exercise power. It is the state (whether national or internation) which should protect human rights and dignity, not the CEO of Nike. Consumer democracy is BS and unjust; anyone who's not a consumer loses out (those Chinese workers, for example). Whereas we're not all consumers, we're citizens under different governments. Once we recognise that we're all citizens first, consumers second, then we'll recognise reform only lies through the exercies of state power.
