Apple hardware is more expensive? Since when?
Show me a computer comparable to the iMac G5 that is cheaper. I seem to recall that the Gateway Profile costs more these days.
And are the $800 laptops really worth it for serious use? Are the $1100 PC laptops really as good as an iBook?
When I was researching laptops I found several PC laptops that were both cheaper and technically better than the iBook. Some of them were quite nice looking too. Apple's current laptops are nice, but you buy them because you want an Apple, or MacOS X, not because of price/performance.
No objections to the iMac, though. That's a lot of computer for your cash. Heck, I want one myself, even though I don't strictly need one :)
As for the "hackers" bringing down their site.. that was probably caused by the article and link at Slashdot... Slashdot, meet Cherry. Cherry meet The Destroyer of Servers.. err, I mean Slashdot.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing the El Capitan for another year at least. Otherwise, why would they bother rearranging the innards for the MDD's? We all know that the massive power supply and heat sink isn't being used fully by the current hardware sitting in there, so we'll at least be seeing that played out (I hope... ).
Personally, I'd go with the El Capitan case for good and not complain. :) The handles are great, the flip-down side is invaluable, now all they need is a front-mounted USB and FW port and I'll be happy!

I've been waiting for a change to the iBook line-up for a few months, which I know is kind of too soon...but the addition of a 12" DVD model isn't what I was waiting for... I guess it is cool for people to have options, but I was hoping for some better specs.

Voted "don't really care", but that's because this is mainly an issue between the Chinese manufacturer and the Chinese government. Don't really see how this affects me in any way...

I am confused after reading all the posts over the past month or so...is the 1.25 GHz dual G4 going to be actually that slow? What is it as slow as...a 1.7 Ghz Celeron...or worse...a 66MHz PowerMac 6100?

Just quit huh? I'll bet computer production would slow down almost immediately until other companies like AMD and IBM could catch up to quota and become the chip making super-companies of the world like Intel is now.
That's a really good question and it really makes me wonder...

Ok, so the memory thing wasn't exactly doing it for me. I'm looking at getting a 1.25 dualie but I need a little help in motivation. I know the 19" display is going to be coming, at the latest by Jan. But now Apple's finally given me something to bite on. I don't know if you all have seen this yet, but Apple's got a new "Power Couple" rebate offer. I haven't read the fine print yet, but it looks like I get $400 back if I buy my 1.25 and ANY display. That means the 17" looks mighty good....
Add in the memory offer (even if it is 2 256 sticks) and that's not a bad deal. I think the two offers can be combined. Not bad...what do you all think?

This offer starts today and ends Dec. 31, which may mean no 19" before Jan. It seemed to come so quietly....

Unless it's been updated recently, the Mac version of FF is really buggy. For example, start a download, then close the browser window. Now open a new browser window. See the problem?
I have a copy of Camino on my system which I use for the occasional page that won't open in Safari. It's easy to load it too - just highlight the page address and press Cmd-Shift-U.
Wow, never noticed that. Well, I don't really like FF on the Mac because of its bugginess. I've noticed it has some weird problems with JS, and various other things. The review wasn't that great.

The trouble with DRM is that it often affects the average Joe consumer more than it hurts those it's intended to stop.
CDs that don't play in a PC annoy Joe Public who buys a CD and wants to listen to it on his office PC while at work. The guy who planned on pirating it can easily get round the DRM and go on his merry way.
DRM embedded in iTunes annoy Joe Public who burned a track onto his wedding video and now can't distribute it to the wedding guests without working out an authorise/deauthorise schedule.
The record companies assume everyone is out to be a criminal while the 'criminals' don't bother buying DRMed files or strip out protection and do what they want so just as many files end up on P2P networks and on dodgy CDs on street corners.

So, FF1-6. Which is your favourite and why? Remake or original?
Right now I'm loving FF3 on the DS (lovely art design, catchy music, seems better paced than the first 2), the first because it feels ultra-old skool and 6. bored with FF2 and 4, at least for the time being.
I picked 4, SNES version. Cecil and Kain were great characters and the story was really good.

don't know if this issue has been solved already but...
what happens when you type in 'alias' into a terminal window?
and what shell are you running? you can tell this by typing in 'echo $SHELL'
you could always type in 'cd; ./.rid' if you haven't started on any work and just do a reinstall.
if theres some other reason that it's not working, then we'll try to find a solution

If the 14" is less $$$ get it for sure, unless portability is an issue. In that case a 12" would be better. I like my 12" 600MHz, I just wish I had the new processor and video card. Oh well I still love it, but I am a bit jeolous of your 14" 700Mhz.
Does anyone know if they ever ran a speed test comparing an iBook 600 with the 750cx processor to the iBook 600 with the 750fx. Is there much difference?

I wouldn't be surprised if apple just brings something out without a huge media event. So many people know Apple now anyway. They'll get press no matter what.

There's no version for 8.6. You'll need OS X.
Edit: There's a client for Linux/PPC, but it required a G4 or better.
Edit2: Actually, I found one. SETI@Home X (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5012/).
Requirements: PowerPC, System 7.5.5

Maybe you could liken the Terror to the mass take over of the MP3 industry with the iPod. :D
Sorry, but I really fail to see any connection between the two. Robespierre may have become the Revolution and Steve may have become Apple, but the connection ends there.

For this problem, try getting the User Agent switcher (I think it's not a platform-based extension).
Thanks, I will give that a try and see if helps out at all. . .

...completely. He echoed my words from previous posts. This is a rumor, and already some are getting their hopes up. I remark that people in these fora do that, and then I'm told, "I don't get worked up! It's just a rumor." Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
This is BS until we get something a whole helluva lot more substantial. And like solvs, I hope my cynicism is misplaced.

What if Intel just quit. They said they were done making chips. Would the world end?
OR, what if they drastically cut production so that prices on the rare chips skyrocketed? Could they get in trouble with the government like Microsoft does? Interesting concept...
OR What if they just his pause for a year.
