Dear Gang,
I need some help regarding a recent Apple purchase and thought y'all might be able to give some advice. I'm new to this forum, but have been perusing it for a couple of weeks.
I recently ordered an iMac and an iBook. These are the first Macs that I've ever owned, and I'm going to sell my PCs. The reason for the switch: I'm sick of not being able to get these damn PCs to work and now that I'm taking more digital photos and videos of the kids, I don't want to entrust them to Windows. I bought the iMac to get us initiated into the Apple system and the iBook to use as a peripheral internet portal (wireless) and to have as a hard-drive depot for photos taken in the field. Eventually, I will get a Power Mac.
My dilemna is this: I've yet to receive the iBook and have begun to wonder if I shouldn't cancel the order and wait to see if the rumors about a new Powerbook coming out in a week are true. As I do digital work (soon to be 11mp images), I thought that a G4 processor might be really nice. My thinking is that the lower-end Powerbook might drop in price enough to let me get a G4 for just a little more than I'm paying for my iBook, or that the iBook itself might shortly follow with a G4 processor. However, I'm not totally up on the rumors and would appreciate any insight that the group can offer in these regards.
TIA and sorry for the long post,
Mark

Amen to that! I wonder, the new dual duallies (or dual quads), do they have two or four (four or eight for the quads) WU's at a time? Or can one duallie do one WU and are both processors on one chip working on the same WU?

I always wonder wether people actually use visual plugins with iTunes
hmm, I (almost) never turn them on, and I like to keep the "minimized" player "floating" on top...

lol oh no the history major has spoken. i enjoyed the brief recap you gave about the revolution and apple's history but that wasnt what i was going for. im strictly talking about the two men themselves.
As the french revolution proceeded, Robespierre came to associate himself more and more with the essence of the conflict at hand. In the revolutions worst years, Robespierre was often noted to speak of an illness he acquired, he said that his life was not interwoven with the revolution. through the massacres and even the terror, Robespierre defended these acts b/c he was convinced that they were needed for the revolution to really come to fruition. i believe Robespierre compromised himself to become this greater cause, and went to extreme lengths to excuse the revolution and allow it to proceed uncontrolled. extreme? yes. but i feel robespierre really did come to represent the cause and errors that were the revolution
now i say robespierre and jobs are alike b/c jobs seems to be apples own "personal representative". Like robespierre, jobs is known for being difficult to work for. strictly b/c jobs refused to compromise the goal of apple in any way, and robespierre did the same by excuses the murders. the two characters persist in thier cause and like wise meet opposition from within thier own cabinet. thats some of what i think
oh and btw im a history major two, well double major with biochem.cheers

Is there a public beta yet? I hate the flashy look with all the black, but do want to give it a try before passing judgement.
Follow the prompts here -- if you are not MSDN, you will need to request entry into the public beta program (there's a link on the page).

Not sure about google pc because you can put it on MAC just like XP on mac!
Well, do you have a preview of Google OS? I'm dyin' to see what it looks like. What if it isn't OS after all, just the plugin for Windows and MAC? Like half of google OS on MAC and XP? Do you know what I'm saying? Well, something like that. lol
I know I'm not alone here, and it pains me to see Macintosh written as MAC. Please, use Mac. It'll give you more credibility around here I think.

Isn't it amazing that no matter what the topic of a thread is about it always seems to degrade into people getting mad at how expensive a Macintosh is? Not to change the subjedt or anything...Carry on.

Oh, lookie, a place to vent about Adobe...
I have been using Photoshop since 2.0 and CS was by far the most disappointing upgrade so far... the added features are very minor and they broke a few things... the type tool is less useful than it was in 7.0 - that irritating underline can't be hidden, so text below 9 points is impossible to read while typing... you can't drag downwards to select the entire line of text, so if the text runs off the screen, there is no way to select all the text in the line. The other thing that changed for the worse - the transform functionality was totally botched - maybe the handles are more sensitive? I find myself moving rather than scaling all too often - and skew text rather than moving it.
Come on, is moving really transforming? Who uses the transform command to move something? And what serious designer skews text?
I'm also bitter that they dropped LiveMotion... I bought Flash MX but the interface is so awful I still find myself using LiveMotion to create projects that have to be completed on a tight deadline...

This is an interesting thread, I am glad it got resurrected (thanks JSW), it is interesting to see people lamenting the "old days" a year-and-a-half ago.
It is my second anniversary as a member here tomorrow (feb 18th), though I used to lurk for the better part of 2002. I still see some old faces from that time, although they seem to be overpowered by all the new blood. I wonder how old-school I am at the two-year mark (comparatively).
I remember spikey vaguely, which was refreshed by KC's linking to a classic thread involving a protracted flame-war between joey j and spikey, which while asinine, was also pretty entertaining and rather informative. I am so glad that no-one deconstructs posts like joey j (or john123 iirc), it was ridiculous to follow. It was also amusing to look at expectations of G5s waay before they came, or even reasonable assumptions about the speed-increases of G4s, which never happened.
As for the political forum, for the past 1.5 years, I have posted mainly there, as thankfully I have not needed much tech help and some of the help/rumor threads become unduly repetitive for my tastes. This is why it took me almost two years to acheive 6502 status. It is my experience that the political forum ebbs and flows, depending on contributers and news items. being an election year, was a rather spirited time, with a wealth of contributers from all walks-of-life and viewpoints. Since it's crash and burn after the Election, it has been decidedly in ebb mode, but I am sure it will recover in time. I feel this is true for the forums at large, also, as some really great threads still pop up and get the community involved.
Through all this time, however, I have been impressed that MR has managed to keep such a high-level of discourse and civility, which is a testament to both the moderators and to the members. Considering the site's rapid growth, this is no small task. I look forward to continual enjoyment in the months and years ahead.

Does this include everything that comes standard on a Mac box?

And, by an amazing coincidence, QEMU just happens to include a FreeDOS image...
The iEmulator site admits it's built on top of qemu. What's the big deal here, hm?
From the FAQ:
Is iEmulator based on the BOCHS emulator?
No! BOCHS is a fantastic, flexible effort, but we found it to be too slow to be "day-to-day usable" on the majority of hardware we tested with. In all of the tests we've tried, our solution, based on the powerful QEMU codebase, runs significantly quicker! Please note that QEMU is a trademark of Fabrice Bellard.

Multicore is there for redundancy. That's like saying you use multiple processor systems for redundancy.
I would be of the distinct impression it just wasn't commercially viable to build the PPC 970 on a 0.13m process with a dual core. Doesn't mean it won't come after the production process is revised. In fact I would consider it highly likely that sometime during the 0.09m generation a dual-core version will be released.
Every major processor company is planning to send their processors multi-core over the next few years so it really is only a matter of when it will reach the consumer.
