They're all just computers at the end of the day. To call one a desktop and the other a workstation are just ways of grouping them. They can both do the same things (essentially manipulate binary numbers damn fast).

    R.E. Pessimism.

    Ok lets recap;

First the new power macs, here is a fresh quote from Macuser UK, whos tests are held in great respect. There's just not enough performance or value in the 1GHz DP model to recommend it

The imacs are being compared to PCs that are not exactly top flight machinery from the entire PC range.

The gap between Macs and PCs in terms of power for money paid, is growing wider, not shrinking.

The apple board have effectively turned OSX from a promising Unix based system to a money gathering scam via jaguar/dot Mac, and Mr Jobs has another what $40 mil (did I read that correctly?) in the bank.

Its no good saying that on the one hand apple is a business not a charity, lets give them a break, and then TREATING them like a charity when they are down. If they want my money and that of goodness knows how many others, they need to stop fleecing people with software pricing, and get some decent hardware out NOW, not in 04, business wont wait.

I say, if THAT lot doesnt call for some healthy pessimism, then god knows what does!

I think Mac users just live in their happy little world and think their computers are still the best... well, wake up!
As of now, PCs kick every Mac's ass, they are just simply faster! Mhz may not matter that much, but a 2Ghz DP compared to a 1.25Ghz DP has to be faster, if you configure it right.
The reason I use a mac is the software, no Windows can beat OSX! And, as a matter of fact, my mac looks better than any of the pcs my friends have...

Is there something we can do to help?

Thank you for asking. I don't know whether there's anything you can do to help, Bousozoku, but whoever agrees with me could help by joining me in sending Apple the feedback that we are fed up with sluggish computer performance, both in terms of software and hardware. If enough of us talk back, maybe they will bring things up to speed.

Power4 May Give Insight into Next-Generation Apple CPU
by Remy Davison, Insanely Great Mac
    October 10th 2002

IBM next week will provide a preview of its 64-bit Power4 processor. Designed for both desktops and entry-level servers, the new PowerPC chip could find its way into Apple desktops sometime in the future, according to a report in the EETimes.

The Power4 will be the first IBM PowerPC processor which incorporates Motorola's AltiVec instruction set, which has long been a feature of the Motorola G4s used in Apple's Power Macs, PowerBooks, flat-panel iMacs and eMacs.

IBM will detail the chip at the Microprocessor Forum, running October 14-17. According to the report EETimes, the chip will support extensions which will provide compatibility with PowerPC architecture, with backward-compatibility with 32-bit environments. Commentators in the article argue that this will ensure compatibility with the Mac OS.

"Apple would have to be crazy not to use this part," Peter Glaskowsky. editor-in-chief of The Microprocessor Report, the forum's host, said to EETimes.

However, there are obstacles to the Power4's use: Apple would need to invest significant time in OS development to support a 64-bit environment. Moreover, software developers would need to rework their applications to take full advantage of the chip.

The upsides, should Apple decide to adopt the Power4, include a superscalar pipeline and symmetric multiprocessing.

Analysis: Jobs has had a sneak preview of the PowerPC roadmap that we aren't privileged to, but it's safe to say he's happy with the 'options'. The work needed to rework OS X to get the best performance out of the Power4 may take considerable time and investment; however, it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that Apple could implement the Power4 and use the existing 32-bit architecture in its boxes. It's been done before and they're doing it now: the current PM G4s are a case in point, employing processors which cannot take full advantage of DDR.

Similarly, Apple has pulled such stunts in the past, with some deplorable, half-baked Performas. Power4 - like the early PM G4/350 - might give Apple the marketing edge it sorely needs while it competes with the next-generation Intel/AMD chips. To be able to use Power4 in a 32-bit environment while it waits for the OS to catch up may prove a temptation for Apple that is too great to ignore.

The LOTR DVDs are all in DTS.

While on the topic, I haven't been able to play DTS with Apple's DVD player. I just get no sound. It works in VLC though.

I think MacRumors has never had a very big "community" feel to it... it's always been very functional. Mac Rumors w/ discussions. ...

I came across this while verifying Mr. Anderson's previous identity. Yes, it makes me feel like a new pup given the vast age of others' memberships (although I'm now in something like the 33rd percentile in terms of seniority).

However, I'm posting because I think that, at least to me, the forums do provide a fair sense of community. Perhaps it was missing for a while, back in those years before I stumbled into the light, but I think we feel like a community now. Any of the elders care to comment?

one of my fraternity brothers has one. no where near as cool as an apple cube. i showed him the apple cube and he said he wanted one. too bad he is not in the market for a new computer.

one neat thing about it- it is water cooled with a radiator, i bet it is quieter than a fan.... although our cube needed no fan or radaitor.

one the bright side, i have convinced one of my brothers to get a mac and he is in the midst of pricing them out now. :D :D :D

And for those of you who arn't fans of Spymac, ThinkSecret just posted the same thing.

Sucks to be an Apple user :) Just kidding, I'm happy with my new PM.

    Hope the 360 takes note

I agree and have been thinking the same thing lately.

Why Microsoft doesn't take the IE7 core and port it to XNA (360), I'll never know. (as long as it was FREE)

Full version Internet Channel is good. I like the auto-hiding toolbar. :)
Again, no complaints about a free browser from me, especially one that enables me to surf while sitting.

Microsoft's half became "Windows NT" and IBM's half became "OS/2".

You are sort of correct, but you imply a timeline that is not correct. This stuff goes back a number of years, so my memory fades. At any rate, M$ and IBM codeveloped OS/2. It started out as MS-DOS 5 and IBM-DOS 5. (A few years later, both IBM and M$ shipped versions of DOS 5 and DOS 6 based on the old DOS codebase.) OS/2 was not ready when the IBM PS/2 line shipped. When OS/2 shipped, Presentation Manager, its GUI, was not ready.

In the meantime time, M$ had continued to work on Windows. IIRC M$ released Windows 3.0. OS/2 was not exactly blowing the market away. M$ announced that it would release a new version of Windows called Windows NT for "New Technology" with the Windows 3.0 GUI. It is my understanding that Win NT is OS/2 with an incompatible set of APIs. I have recently been informed that the APIs for text-based OS/2 applications remain a part of NT.

At any rate, after the announcement of NT, the relationship between IBM and M$ soured dramatically. M$ abandoned OS/2 with IBM becoming the sole developer of the OS. As part of the severance agreement, IBM was allowed use of the original Win NT APIs in OS/2. That is how IBM was able to develop in OS/2 a "better Windows than Windows."

Anyone is welcome to make corrections or additions what I have written--or, we can get back to talking about Macs;)

No reason. I was just trying to show that you don't have to spend $300 in order to get a copy of XP Pro.

I'm one of those "honest customers." My wife has CS installed on her PowerBook, so I thought it wouldn't be allowed on my Power Mac. So this is great news. :)

Um, I don't think that is permitted. Here's the section from the PhotoShop CS EULA.

2.4 Portable or Home Computer Use. The primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer.

I think this iPhone is a dumb idea. They should concentrate on something cool, that everyone would like. My suggestion is iMidget. You get your very own midget to help you with your mac. The midget will not only be able to help you with your day to day work, but if you have an AppleCare plan, the midget will be able to assist you with all of your problems.

You can easily tell when whoever submits [E] to SpyMac you know either it's been given a Photoshop job, or someone has too much time on their hands, assuming the grease on their hands is time. :p

Yet some of us still wonder what's up with iPhone.org and/or MacMate. If anyone ever gets to talk with d'man (in some cases, again), ask him about this, and the forums. :p :D

Most 17" Sony notebooks are only 1-2 hour battery life.

We are actually stocking the S model at John Lewis when it is available, along with a Toshiba G30 with HD DVD-ROM drive, (DVD burner combined, but no HD DVD burning). We have asked to trial both at our branch in Nottingham.

I can see the MacBook Pro 17" following with similar specs further down the line. If Sony can do it for 2000, I expect Apple could do it for a similar price within 12 months. I also expect a lot of these features to find their way onto the Mac Pro when launched either as standard or options, (really the only one missing off the PowerMac is Blu Ray). I'd of course like to buy an iMac in about 12-18 months time with digital TV tuner and Blu Ray for a fairly standard price too, as this would fit in with my purchasing timescale.
