ha, great advice. But I think Doctor Q has the right attitude. It will continue to serve him well for years to come. I'm working on my PowerMacG4 450 right now and I still use it as my main machine at home (I have a 667 TiPB for work) and I bought it when it first came out, so that's about 3 years ago....not bad if you ask me.

So I'll be looking to buy a new machine next year and look forward to what ever it is G5, Power4, what ever. And by then the G6 and Power5 will be front page of MacRumors....

    wrylachlan:

64-bit color depth would presumably mean 16-bit fields for RGB and one for Alpha, and this would not be ideally suited to math as a single 64-bit integer. It would, however, work very well in AltiVec which would treat it as 4x16-bit fields just like it really is. AltiVec could even do two 64-bit color operations per operation since it can handle 8x16-bit fields at once.

I'd like to see the RIAA, or in my case BPI, try to revoke the license on the 200 CDs I own simply because I've ripped them to my HDD to load onto my iPod. Removing the DRM to load songs I have purchased onto my phone, media streamer or Panasonic digital music player seems very similar to me, as does buying them without DRM.

Your CD does not have DRM built in that you agreed to when purchasing the CD. Thus burning your CD is not a violation of the DMCA. Furthermore, the iTunes Music Store terms of service don't govern the usage of your CD collection.

Burning or ripping a CD does not bypass copy protection (unless it's one of those ridiculous anti-copy CDs which is a separate argument altogether), does not break encryption, and does not violate any laws as long as you are not redistributing the files. Breaking DRM on a digital file DOES break a law--specifically, that DRM protection cannot be bypassed or broken. Using PyMusique software DOES violate the iTMS terms of service, specifically that the iTMS is ONLY authorized through iTunes itself. Songs from iTunes have DRM and users are bound to the TOS. Those are the terms of the purchase, and doing anything to change that is a violation of international copyright laws.

    Your analogy is invalid.

All in all, its still a deal and should get many people to consider buying an Apple from Apple. But I'm more curious as to why they're doing it - trying to get rid of stock? Or is it more of a holiday special?

    http://www.physics2005.org/events/einsteinathome/index.html

    What is Einstein@Home?

The screensavers are being developed for Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.

Albert Einstein discovered long ago that we are adrift in a universe filled with waves from space. Colliding black holes, collapsing stars, and spinning pulsars create ripples in the fabric of space and time that subtly distort the world around us. These gravitational waves have eluded scientists for nearly a century. Exciting new experiments will let them catch the waves in action and open a whole new window on the universe - but they need your help to do it!

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from rapidly rotating neutron stars, known as pulsars. Scientists believe that some pulsars may not be perfectly spherical, and if so, they should emit characteristic gravitational waves, which LIGO and GEO 600 will begin to detect in coming months.

    http://www.physics2005.org/

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space and time produced by events in our galaxy and throughout universe, such as black hole collisions, shockwaves from the cores of exploding supernovas, and rotating pulsars. These ripples in the space-time fabric travel toward Earth, bringing with them information about their origins, as well as invaluable clues to the nature of gravity.

Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity, but only now in the 21st Century has technology advanced enough for scientists to detect and study them. Although gravitational waves have not yet been detected directly, their influence on a binary pulsar (two neutron stars orbiting each other) has been measured accurately, and was found to be in good agreement with original predictions. Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies in this field.

How about when girls become total sluts and break up with their boyfriends because they meet to many guys on myspace? That's probably a problem. Trust me.

How about all the kids that are molested on there every day?

How about the children that are setting up to meet "friends" from there, and then get kidnapped.

    Need more?
I really don't think that many girls breakup with their bf's cause of myspace and if they do breakup then it is neither my problem and was inevitable anyway.
And sure there are the sexual predators out there, but I don't think there have been that many cases of molestation attributed to MySpace. I'm not defending that it is right, cause it is definitely terribly wrong that these things happen. I guess I'm just saying I don't think about that sort of stuff with MySpace, call me ignorant but I just think that stuff like that probably happens more on AOL chatrooms.

I think this might have some validity to what I say. (http://www.wired.com/news/politics/1,70254-0.html)

Indeed, and a fairly naff one at that. Home build 1.4GHz Athlon (original), Server 2003 Enterprise. Haven't rebooted it in a LONG time, and it's a local DNS/DHCP/Print/File/Active Directory server

I don't understand why Mac folks don't think recent copies of Windows aren't stable.
Maybe it's the same reason PC guys think Macs are still running OS 8

Is it against the Mac OS X EULA to install it on any non-Apple computer?
Possibly, but the terms are written in such a way that it's not very clear that it would be a valid prohibition.
In that case, CherryOS and PearPC users are criminals.
If it's even binding, ignoring that type of license provision would be a civil, not criminal, thing. It's not piracy if you legally obtained the number of copies of software you are using. Apple can rightly refuse to support it, certainly.

With Audio Hijack Pro, no - it only works on Macs, and all Macs have identical sound hardware (no dedicated sound card comes with any of them) (except possibly the Mac clones, which I'm ignoring for the sake of simplicity). On the Winamp side, your soundcard might make a difference in what you hear on your computer - regardless of your soundcard, what you hear in Winamp is the sound data that gets written to the WAV file.

Thanks. So that means there is essentially no quality loss when the WMV file gets converted to WAV? I understand of course that the WMV file itself was lossy. But from your description the WAV file should be the de-compressed output with no other changes.

If you then rip the WAV to CD, you have the same CD that you would've otherwise paid an extra .99 a track for. If you re-compress, you will have some further sound quality degradation (sort of like re-saving JPEG files.)

    Tablet yes.
I think people forget that all of the discussion of the dimensions fo a TiBook make it appear very portable. Like obsession over an extea 1/4" thichness. But if you add in the peripherals you schlepp around and you really need that dedicated laptop case. Then that 1/4" or even 2 inches really does not matter.
I think a "hiptop" or "tablet" form really can be marketed as a laptop subsitute to complement a good desktop. My old newton 2100 did 90% of my desktop functions and man was it easy to throw into a backpack/shoulderbag/eurof-g carry all/briefcase.
It is astonishing that Apple does not even have a sub-notebook.
It would certainly be something extra i would buy.

mdouglas, if you can, I would cancel the order. Both laptops will be updates really soon (they are good now - but, I would want the updated models). You might as well wait a while + get a nice new ibook with a 32Mb Graphics card, faster G3.

Here's to hoping that all that rumored wattage and cooling capacity is really for a Power4 at MW. Here's something to think about.

We all agree that the current dual-gigs (and probably the dual-1.25's) don't need all that cooling and electrical power that is included in the mirror chassis, right? OK, now people are saying that it's because this chassis will be used for the new (power hungry and hot) G5's/Power4s.

So is it wise to put these fans and heavy duty power supply for the current PowerMacs when it's not needed? The cost will increase (good assumption) and the noise level is high (according to posts).

Something doesn't add up here. And me without my calculator ...

The average Output/month of CustomPC is about 1,000,000 points higher then ours. Don't think we can stop them from overtaking.
We will have to get back at them in a month or so ;)

What? That isn't even remotely how pipelines work. The problem with large pipelines with many stages is when there is a miss in branch prediction. At that point everything already in the pipeline is wasted. Branch prediction failure is a very very bad thing. Fortunately both AMD and Intel have gotten really good at it as they have ramped up the stages. This can also be mitigated some with damn good compilers (of which Intel is good at making, but no one really uses).

Macs are awesome integrated platforms. However the G4 CPU is now an old dog.

Quality is just a marketing concept.

It's been replaced by cheap products tossed out the door in large quantities.

Just keep telling us you make a quality product, and you may just be able to fool the gullible.

I just ordered a MBP and it first said it would arrive in 10+ days, then they slimmed the estimate down to 7 days.

Just yestereday I found out that it arrived to my surprise about 5 days, and thats with custom config! I have to point this out as Apple has definaly tried to improve their shipping and handeling relationship to online customers. A very high compliment to all customers concerned.

I shipped it to a state with no sales tax (oregon) And my brother is sending it down to me by FedEx it's supposed to arrive on teusday (smooth move eh?) Saved about 200 bucks.

Anyhow. I think Apple deserves a phat pot brownie for their late good acts of public relations. :D
