Your definition of a "modern" processor is wholly arbitrary and holds no water. Besides SIMD units, other things are also very important, such as:
Whether it is "Aribitrary" or not. The fact is Intel/AMD both have SIMD units in their "consumer" procs. Apple is a premium Tier 1 Computer Manufacturer. They at the very least should contain what the low end compettion offers.
1) Cost: 750fx G3 is cheap. Fabbed on a 130nm SOI processes, the die size is a tiny 34.6 sq mm. Great for low-end Macs.
I contend that a G4 fabbed at 130nm would be cheap enough to obviate the need for a G3. Moto should have had 130nm G4 by now. Their HiP7 process has be functional for over a year.
2) Power dissipation: 750fx dissipates 3.6W typical @ 800mhz, 1.4v. Great for laptops.
The heat dissipation requirements of a 130nm G4 would be negligle versus a G3 on the same process.
3) Size: 750fx is pakaged in 21mm x 21mm... something like .75" x .75". That is tiny, great for latops.
I think most people would prefer Altivec ehancements.
The 750fx is a perfectly modern processor for laptops, supporting the latest and greatest fab tech, a large L2 cache, 256bit internal data paths, and minimalistic yet sufficient execution resources. Even so it can often beat G4's when AltiVec is not useful. It does it's job perfectly.
I agree to disagree here.
Any apps that support Double Precision math run slower on a G3
4 Pipes IMO are preferrable to 7 but it's a trade off. The G4 gained a %40+ speed advantage from adding the 3 stages ..
The lack of MERSI Cache Coherency is a downer although I wouldn't expect dual proc iBook.
The G3 has done well for Apple but it really needs to be put out to pasture.
Look for Apple to be Minimim G4 by next summer at the latest.

so here is what I have been able to gather from the pain of waiting for the new PB......
Educational discount ends 9/25
Employee discount ends 9/30
Amazon.com out of 667 with note that it is to be replaced with 800
Some guy in Holland couldn't buy a new PB because they were out of stock and could not get any more (this is a tough one to put faith in)
Some uni's have additional discount until 9/30 (namely san jose state)
Pioneer has dvd-r notebook drives to be released in 4th quarter
ATi has released new mobility 9000 graphics chip to be released next month (although compaq is slated to be the one releasing these next month, we can hope PB's have them though).
So???....???? now we just wait and see.

I know I can get away with using any Apple computer, but when you are spending your $$$ and you frequent rumor sites...you tend to want to see updates at the right time...not after you buy. I will buy regardless of if Apple updates the iBook or TiBook in the next month.

If you are interested in setting up MythTV, do not waste your time with Ubuntu or any other distribution that requires you to build Myth yourself. You'll spend a LONG time dealing with lots and lots of tedious details.
Instead, I suggest trying KnoppMyth, as nowaycomputer also suggested. It is a version of Knoppix Linux, that comes with MythTV already installed. It automatically detects most of your hardware. Although, you may have to answer a few questions about your TV card or something like that.

I set it up on an extra AMD box that I have in less than an hour.

Didn't IE for Mac even have MSN search included in it? Perhaps they were trying to get us.
BUT: If Apple were to change to their engine or media, would the shoe be on the other foot?

Isn't it amazing that no matter what the topic of a thread is about it always seems to degrade into people getting mad at how expensive a Macintosh is? Not to change the subjedt or anything...Carry on.

I hope it is ok to discuss this topic here - I wanted to know the exact correlation between laptop use and male fertlity.
Does it affect your count only if you use it placed on the lap or even in general use like placing on the table or desk.

No WiFi?
I'd take the XBox 360 Premium, + WiFi over an XBox 360 with a bigger hard drive, thanks.
I don't see why XBox 360 owners would be ticked, unless they *needed* HDMI (why does it matter that much? Component is still the same quality). It's just a hard drive upgrade. I'd still buy a Premium if I was buying one today.
Component is more prone to interference and it doesn't have the HDCP token.

I have to say, they picked one cool coffeehouse to set up shop. I wonder if people ever walk in and talk to them about the software they make? It might be interesting if they occasionally set up an hour or so where people could come in and give them feedback on Delicious Library.
Oh ya, and did you see the picture of the latte? COOOOOOL. :D

That one does look better...but still something you'd have to pay me to have in my house...a lot. I think a cool clear case mod would be sick...some nice unnecessary lights inside :) The white is fine by me.

Yay for Firefox!
I use it almost exclusively in Windows. Lately, It's become my primary browser on the Mac too. Safari is very nice, but Firefox has some features that I've come to love :)
In the end, having people migrate from IE to alternative browsers, be it Firefox, Safari or Opera, will be better for the web. Some competition is needed :)

Despite the fact I have heard a very reputable person put it in that time frame just looking at past history IBM said Sahara would be sampling Q1 2002. By 05/2002 it was in iBooks.

Anybody know why they didn't put Access in Office for Mac 2004? I personally hate the program, but I had to actually go into the lab and run it on a Winblows for my Info. Tech. class.
My guess is that, since it relies so heavily on Visual Basic and ActiveX / .NET / whatever, it would easily be the hardest application to port from Windows to OS X. In order for Access to work, you would need to port over tons of APIs.... It would be almost (but granted, not quite quite) like MS undertaking to create WINE.
