No big deal. The cellphone companies keep recorded phone messages plus all phonebook and data/photo entries in a large database. AOL has been keeping a record for years, they are just now telling you they are waiving your privacy.

wha? this isn't true, is it?

Miglia needs to fix their other products before foisting yet another DVR solution, since their other ones hardly work!

My AlchemyTV card conflicts with iChat and I have to reinstall the software for it all the time, and even then, AlchemyTV is slower than hell, and it's been over a year since I bought the kit.

I hope ElGato's support of the ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 unit is good, because that looks to be a good option. Unfortunately, no reviews yet.

Please reread my post above. According to the www.cpuscorecard.com website, an iMac 800 MHz machine is comparable in performance to a 1.8Ghz P4 machine. And if you compare the cost of the iMac to a similarly equipped Dell 1.8Ghz P4 machine, the iMac is actually the cheaper of the two.

This was a real eye opener for me.

Mayte this is too logical, but the double your memory program is going until Dec. 31st. How likely is it that they would release a new product while that promotion is going? As hopeful as I am for a new PB release, I am now leaning towards MWSF.

That sounds interesting. As a developer, I can tell you that would be useful. But...

Carbon to Cocoa Translator: an application that makes a rough cocoa translation of existing carbon source code. The resulting code still needs modification to make it efficient, but this speeds up the process of carbon to cocoa drastically.

Once all developers are on cocoa (2008) and the x86 is starting to seriously transition to IA-64 (2008) Apple ports OSX to Itanium and all developers have a simple recompile.
That's not realistic. First, developers will never all transition to Cocoa. PhotoShop, Quark, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, and 90% of applications need to be cross-platform. There is no good Objective C compiler for Win32, meaning developers for cross-platform applications will never write in Cocoa because it would require them to have two separate versions of their program, or constantly be converting it. If Apple made Project Builder cross platform for Win32, then we'd see some real action in Cocoa (since it is easier than Carbon or other C compilers).

Second, Carbon is no longer insuperior to Cocoa. The only real insuperiority in OS X was the lack of toolbars, drawers, and other specific features. The fact that Carbon apps look crappy is the fault of the developer. And now in 10.2, Carbon apps have access to Services, toolbars, sheets, drawers, etc. It's just a matter of slogging through all the Carbon legacy code and modifying it to look better, work better, etc. Once Carbon developers rewrite the code for their interfaces, you'll barely be able to tell the difference, assuming they follow the guidelines.

Just my 2 cents as well. Most of your other predictions were good.

I would say that the 14 inch deserves a faster either a faster graphics card or more video memory. Just like the iMac 17 inch has a GeForce 4 MX instead of it's little cousins, which have the GeF2MX, the iBook 14 inch could have a faster/better card.

you guys are all talking like the G5 chip is here. Am I missing something or is all this just hopeful speculation and talk out your ^ss?

Until we actually see the damn thing, its really not even worth worrying about - how long has talk of the G5 been going on now anyway, years!?

I'd wait until IBM's little talk in October, that at least might shed some light one way or the other about what the next CPU will be.

Pretty much just the two; an iMac and an iBook. Although, I do dabble a little on the PC in the house. I feel so dirty.

I'm pretty possessive when it comes to my Macs. Neither aliens nor God is allowed near them.

That said, I do have a profile (http://myspace.com/i_h8myspace) up there, mostly for keeping in touch with people (which despite its faults, its good at) and for screwing with the code. It was a real pain in the ass to get it the way I wanted and it taught me a lot about code in general.

I've come across your page through another MR member's, and I was rather impressed by your coding genius, frankly. :)

Read about the $100 laptop project from MIT. Apparently Bill Gates doesn't like it. www.laptop.org is the website.

Good idea in fact. Too bad those don't run mac os x...
Bill hates it because he things the new Origami priced at $500 is perfect for developing contries. umm... bill..... Developing contries cant afford to spend $500 on a computer nor do they always have a place to plug it in and charge.

Moving to 64bit asap does have its benefits. It does mean that in the future when current RAM limits are too small for the biggest of applicatinos the people at apple will be able to just up the RAM. Intel etc. will have to sell its clients a brand new processor and the vendors entirley new computers. If apple makes the move within the next year then once again, technology wise, apple will be ahead.

Who else ehas an OS that is future prrof until the year 99999???

First of all, let me say that this is NOT a post to recruit any individual folders. I am a member of Team MacOS X (Team #1971) and I have not been encouraged by anyone on my team to post this.

All contributions to folding benefit the science, first and foremost. But, that said, the team competition makes it interesting. As a dedicated Mac user, I would very much like to see the Mac folding "community" unite and show what Macs and Mac users can accomplish.

Now, the problem is that no team wants to "give up" their position, points, and forum. But, if Mac users as a community want to be competitive with the Windows and Linux teams, we must make sacrifices and unite. Team MacOS X is far enough in the lead, and the number 11 team in the world with multiple overtakes, to be considered the Number One Mac Folding Team under which we can all unite. It makes mathematical sense, but may be hard to accomplish, but nothing truly worthwhile is ever easy.

I look forward to a spirited discussion. :)

i hope stanford makes a version that sets itself up as dual in the future. it seems long overdue

there's a field in the rc5 client that says number of processors and u just change the value....seems like stanford isn't too concerned about this

Possibly the best parody I have seen. Not that it was wonderful but just that all the others sucked so bad.
