I'm trying to find a website I remember. If I'm remembering correctly (which is in doubt), it showed videos of the results of an engineering contest. Contestants had to create a chair that could be shipped in a flat Fedex box and assembled after being opened. The videos showed the judges opening and assembling the entries and they could actually sit on the completed chairs.

    Or something like that.

Does anybody have a better memory of this than I do, or know what the contest was or where to find it?

I don't feel sorry for them what so ever. Microsoft has been asking for it, if you ask me. Its not my fault they suck.

Has anyone any experience of running Xara on Virtual PC ? If so, does it install and run ok, or is it like shovelling treacle? It runs. That's about all that can be said for it.

If you're just doing really basic stuff, it isn't too bad. But once you get in to motion or lighting effects, it bogs down.

I'd imagine it would depend a bit on your system... though, I can't say I've noticed a massive difference in VPC between my Powerbook 1.0 and my PowerMac DP 1.8.

Yeah, it's loading really slow for me, it would probably timeout, if I would let it go long enough.

It needs an IR emitter to change channels on it's own so it can control a Digital TV box when your away from home.

I don't know... Personally, I'm waiting for now. I'm saving up, so there aren't any funds to buy a 360 now anyway. But, I'm really hoping by the time I'm ready to buy a 360, there will be a redesigned X-Box 360. There will be no division between the "old X-Box 360" and "new X-Box 360" owners.

If it's redesigned as you, the rumor, and a lot of the rumor believers think, then yes there will be a hardware split, just like there's currently a hardware split with those who own hard drives and those who don't.

The GBA was revised twice and fairly quickly. The DS was revised shortly after the original fat. The PlayStation 2 had its revision. You could even say the GameCube got dumbed down when they go rid of the component video cable port.

The GBA -> GBA SP -> GBA Micro added no features that impacted games themselves. No faster processor, for instance. Making the system smaller, adding rechargeable batteries or making the screen brighter didn't split the market. Neither did the DS -> DS Lite.

Ps2 -> Ps2 slim you can argue it split the market from those with broadband adapters and those who didn't have them, but anyone without one in an original Ps2 unit could buy a BBA and be on the same boat. Otherwise, they didn't do anything to the system itself except decrease the size (same with the PSX -> PsOne).

Gamecube that was Nintendo's call, really removing the digital output didn't impact a lot of people, and besides that they offered a trade-in to those who wanted a digital out but didn't have one.

Somehow I don't see Microsoft saying "If you want an HDMI port, send us your old 360 and we'll ship you a new one with HDMI." :p

I'm waiting to see a cooler running X-Box 360, smaller, built-in WiFi ($100 for a USB dongle is ridiculous), possibly internal hard drive (charging us for a proprietary hard drive?!), and most importantly, the premium model hits $299. I don't care about HDMI. I don't care about a black X-Box 360.

Do I expect to see a revision at all anytime soon? I'm really doubtful. I'll probably end up with the $399 premium X-Box 360 this summer, but I'm hoping there will be a redesign by the time I'm ready to buy.

    Keep dreaming. :)
They just started making money on the systems they sell. There's no reason (profit and shareholder wise) to go back on that, release a system that costs more to make and puts them back in the hole. /shrug

You won't see #1 and #2 on your list I guarantee you that. There's no way they reduce the size of the console while keeping it cool; dare I say that's an oxymoron. They need all the internal space they can get to cool the gpu which seems to be the primary reason 360s fail in the first place (mine included). The WiFi is a toss up; I agree that $100 for their adapter is too steep - $20 would be fair IMO. The hard drive has a proprietary connector, true, but AFAIK it's just a 2.5" SATA drive inside. I don't know if the Xbox Scene has found a way to replace the HD or not but I'm sure they have.

by the way, the new layout on the front page looks really great. I mean, it is already pretty clean, but by all means, they out did themselves. Plus, Firebird blocks the ad on the top so there is literally a 2" space of that MacRumor blue/purple color, which is so nice to look at. :)

I'll be interested to see how the MacJeep turns out! If I had a 2k-5k sitting around I'd definately do it to my car!

What I'd really love is totally dashboard integration, dunno how a touchscreen panel would look like in my little corsa! What I have right now is the standard Vauxhall integrated stereo system, with buttons to control volume and change tracks on the steering wheel.

"Total Integration" would mean being able to use a touch screen, but also being able to use the buttons on my steering whee.... Although I would be just as happy removing the entire centre console and replacing it with a touch-screen! Some funky GPS would be great too :)

thats a 25% increase, which is pretty good, and if they add in some other things, it will help as well. I'm not saying duals is a bad idea, I'm just saying there are a lot of hurdles in the way of such a thing happening any time soon.

And of course, one must also take into account that notebooks are always less powerful than desktop machine equivelents. its true in the wintel world, its true in the mac world.

maybe I'll be surprised and apple will come up out with some big innovations making it possible, but I personally just don't see it.

I would hope Steve would throw that thing at whatever moron engineer/ designer showed it to him!:D

I went to Radio Shack the other night and the store manager was tripping over himself to show me a new Sprint phone with *gasp* a color screen. I told him I was waiting for an OSX enabled phone from Apple. He said, "but we have a completely digital system built from the ground up."

    uh, ok...

Great people. I solo a few of my characters, and do just fine. The is a mechanism to look for groups when you are needing to group, but for alot of things its not required.. you CAN solo up to level 70 if you want to.. take a little bit, but can be done.

in the hub, right now, there is a central component like a PC or imac

in the future, there may be a center, but it won't be a big bulky desktop or even laptop

the house or apartment/room with be the center and everything will plug into it...the cpu with either be housed in the walls, small closet, or remote via an ISP

but that may not come as soon as but one day, the computer will disappear from our naked eyes because it will be so seamlessly integrated

the blueberry imac, with it's pleasing design and lack of ugly beige was a step in integrating a cpu into a living space

i have seen nice flat profile tables/desks with PCs integrated into them in such a way that when one walks into the room, there is no evidence that there is a computer there

there are so many otherwise perfect rooms ruined by an ugly computer with wires coming out every which way and big, bulky cpus and terribly designed peripherals

Your thinking too much about the worst side of things. Aren't you grateful they didnt steal umm... $10000?

Well, they did steal over $1000 worth of stuff. Thats a big deal in my book when I only make $10,000 a year and that I'm in college. I know what you are saying but its still crappy for someone to even steal $100 worth of stuff from you.

The only change that I would predict would be the move to a 166MHz system bus and an ability to clock slightly higher. Motorola hasn't yet updated their site with information on the 7455, so one could presume that Apple is preventing Motorola from releasing such information to the public. Quite possibly, the 7455 has clocked to 1.33 or 1.4GHz, but due to an agreement with Apple, Motorola must withold such information until faster PowerMacs are shipping.

Eh, more than likely there is very little difference.

Try it with wireframe--I don't know but it sounds like the least intensive. Set the checkpoint interval to 10 minutes. You should be able calculate work units over 5 MB without trouble. Try to display the fewest polygons possible.

You can always change the options, if they don't seem to be working.
What about the Proxy "stuff" - should I mess with that, or since it seems to be working just not touch it?

    Thanks :)

    MacCoaster:

Eh, 450mhz x 2 or 900mhz, not the same but pretty similar. It is common to refer to busses by their effective speed (533mhz and 400mhz for P4, 333mhz, 266mhz and 200mhz for Athlons), and so I am continueing to refer to the PPC-970 bus as 900mhz. I don't see how anything I said was wrong.

Note also that Arstech revleals that the bus runs at a fixed part of core clock speed (1/2), so that the bus is 900mhz only on the 1800mhz PPC-970. A 1.4ghz model would sport a 700mhz bus... with a data rate of "only" 622mhz, which means data transfer rate of "only" 4.9 GB/sec. This would work fine with dual channel DDR-333 even (oops, I meant DDR-166x2 :) ).
