    hope that works!

Actually I just got it second hand! too bad the previous user didn't fix it up!

    P.S.
My local dealer is going to charge me about 55USD for fixing this problem. I can't believe users like us are PAYING the fix for a KNOWN issue. I hope the firmware works! Thanks a lot!!!

    What is Einstein@Home?

The screensavers are being developed for Linux, Windows and Mac operating systems.

Albert Einstein discovered long ago that we are adrift in a universe filled with waves from space. Colliding black holes, collapsing stars, and spinning pulsars create ripples in the fabric of space and time that subtly distort the world around us. These gravitational waves have eluded scientists for nearly a century. Exciting new experiments will let them catch the waves in action and open a whole new window on the universe - but they need your help to do it!

Einstein@Home is a project developed to search data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US and from the GEO 600 gravitational wave observatory in Germany for signals coming from rapidly rotating neutron stars, known as pulsars. Scientists believe that some pulsars may not be perfectly spherical, and if so, they should emit characteristic gravitational waves, which LIGO and GEO 600 will begin to detect in coming months.

    http://www.physics2005.org/

Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space and time produced by events in our galaxy and throughout universe, such as black hole collisions, shockwaves from the cores of exploding supernovas, and rotating pulsars. These ripples in the space-time fabric travel toward Earth, bringing with them information about their origins, as well as invaluable clues to the nature of gravity.

Albert Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves in his general theory of relativity, but only now in the 21st Century has technology advanced enough for scientists to detect and study them. Although gravitational waves have not yet been detected directly, their influence on a binary pulsar (two neutron stars orbiting each other) has been measured accurately, and was found to be in good agreement with original predictions. Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Physics for their studies in this field.

Heh, you really are turning into the old man of macrumors there jef ;) I agree though. It's a shame those you listed (and omitted) were either too contentious for others to handle, or lost interest due to one reason or another. There's so many new members now that it's hard to get to know anyone like in the early days of MR.

Then again, you could always become a demi. Things get a lot more personal in there ;)

Its very frustrating and I hope Apple will all make us happy sometime soon.

I am confused after reading all the posts over the past month or so...is the 1.25 GHz dual G4 going to be actually that slow? What is it as slow as...a 1.7 Ghz Celeron...or worse...a 66MHz PowerMac 6100?

and will there be a Microsoft OS 64-bit compliant Windows -- all complete and ready by the time the AMD chip is released.
Of course. Windows XP-64bit is already running on Hammer.
In addition, are these companies looking to produce Desktops with this technology, or more primarily focusing on server use.
There are two verisons of the Hammer. One for servers, the Opteron. One for desktops (aka 8th Generation Athlon [886]; Athlon was 786), which uses Hammer technologies.
Do these manufactures even have incentives to upgrade to 64-bit technology when they have 3+ Ghz intels, and AMDs? For all lmarketing purposes, they would be downgrading (1.8 ghz (64) compared to 3+ ghz (32)).
Why of course they do have incentives. One, 64bit sounds good. Two, faster. I'm not sure what you're smoking about 1.8GHz thing (I dunno the exact starting speed, but I do know it's supposed to be rated at "3400+", so perhaps it's indeed 1.8GHz, but labelled 3400+. Don't assume because PPC970 is coming with 1.6 to 1.8GHz that Opterons have to be the same; but feel free to correct me wrong and I'll admit to 1.8GHz).
I wouldn't count Apple out on this one -- them being first and doing it well. I would say they have incentives to integrate this 64-bit tech for the pro side -- the side of their product line that might be hurting. How do we know that Apple hasn't been colaborating with IBM and configuring OS X Panther (or whatever) to run spanking fast with the new chips? And have PowerMacs already working at headquarters?
I wouldn't count them out for being one of the first. I'm sure Apple has been colloborating with IBM. I didn't state that they weren't.
The unique thing about Apple is that in order for this 64-bit thing to take hold, it needs to colaborate with two people: itself and IBM.

With other manufactures, they have to colaborate with: themselves, Microsoft, and the Chip maker.
Well gee, they've been doing that for a long time. So what?
    Maybe Apple can be first?
As stated, AMD is coming out with Hammer much earlier than IBM's PowerPC 970. I know Apple isn't in direct competition with AMD, but the PC manufacturers USE AMD processors.

Are you going to say anything to those of us who doubted you? I wouldn't blame you if you did, but I guess I'd respect you if you didn't. I just posted something about you coming back to dance around saying "see, I told you so". :D

I can admit when I'm wrong (ignore my signature), I was just hoping you'd stick around to defend yourself. I hate it when people won't stand up for themselves. Especially when they're right (which you were).

Sorry if I was a d*ck, no hard feelings. :)

The real issue would seem to be whether or not Apple can intice specialized software devopers that traditionally coded only for Sun &/or SGI to delve into Cocoa. If this can be accomplished, not only will Apple prosper, but so will former Sun/SGI customers. To those that don't know, Apple's hardware may be pricey for the average consumer, but it is dirt cheap for the average IT department.

Congrats on the four years! A kid born when you joined would be in preschool now. A kid born when I joined would maybe - possibly - have learned to, oh, drool or roll over or something equally impressive. And our respective posts show our respective "ages" well. ;)

But - by the time I reach your real age, I'll have a posting age of over two, which means I'll be wanting to play with the big kids. Maybe by then I'll be able to decipher Sun Baked's hardware diagram posts....

i hope to make it to five, but over the last few years, part time, i have been working on prereq courses in school...but when i get into the real nitty gritty stuff, i may have to disappear from here for a time, or maybe just be seen very rarely

i think my average is five posts a day, give or take, and that's a lot, day after day, to keep up ;)

if i get on a roll on one thread, five posts could be done in just an hour...just reading that thread, too

but if i look around at many threads, five posts will be done in a space, here and there throughout the day and night, over prolly a good three hours of time

i like to read here more than post, but some here have posts over 10,000 so i assume they like to post more than read...hehe ;)

Most posters here seem to ignore that there is an implementation of OpenOffice for OS X using Java instead of X11 as the underlying software library. You don't need X11 to run it. It uses native OS X font and printing system. It's powerful and free.

It's called NeoOffice/J. Port is by a smart guy named Patrick Luby.
The web site is here. (http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/)
There is also an active bulletin board and forum site here (http://trinity.neooffice.org/)
The current stable version is based on OpenOffice 1.0 but there is also a brand new alpha version using OpenOffice 1.1, and it rocks!

    Max

I was just thinking about one those old, old keyboards that was part of the Lear-Siegler ADM-3A, (http://www.old-computers.com/history/detail.asp?n=32&t=3) which you can see at the link. I spent a lot of time using that generic keyboard as well as a number of DEC terminals before I got my first computer job, including the IBM 5250 block mode terminals, which had a typewriter style keyboard with command (function) keys.

Things were different back then but many terminals didn't have arrow keys and some had embedded arrow keys that required shift or control to make them work. The W, A, S, and D keys worked with some applications. Others required you to simply backspace and re-type everything, though everything was often an 80 (or 40) character line.
