I have no means of transportation, if I did I'd totally apply at an Apple Store. I'd first start off at best buy to have that prior experience so I have a greater chance of getting hired.

...I have to believe that Steve and Co. have something interesting up their sleeve because to follow Motorola's plodding updates to the G4 seems like a slow suicide and would be a terrible thing to do to the stockholders and fans of the platform.

Before I get flamed about how it's worth the performance hit and cost to avoid the PCs reputation for more downtime. I haven't a problem like that since NT4 with sp3 as long as I use a top tier vender like dell. The handful of homegrown machines I've built since then have been notoriously twitchy, but is probably more an indicator of my skills as a system integrator not of the platform in general. Some great, true, and sad points. However, you are comparing old Macs with newer PCs. There are other factors besides processor speed that might be affecting your outcome. In addition, I wonder if the software you're using is optimized for AltiVec.

Secondly, I agree that NT4 is notoriously stable. Isn't it a bit sad, though, that M$ofties have to use an old OS to get stability. Nonetheless, it is true that Wintel users can have greater speed and great stability on their machines. It's still not OS X, but if you're comfortable in the environment and get get things done (sometimes more) efficiently, why would you buy a new (more expensive) Mac.

Thirdly, I think Motorola is keeping up with (the bastardaized interpretation of) Mohr's Law over the past year or two. The problem is that somewhere between their speed superiority and today, they lost ground.

I love Apple, but if they don't find a way to catch up, they're dead in the water.

    Chris

p.s., Dell a "top tier" vendor?

How about when girls become total sluts and break up with their boyfriends because they meet to many guys on myspace? That's probably a problem. Trust me.

How about all the kids that are molested on there every day?

How about the children that are setting up to meet "friends" from there, and then get kidnapped.

    Need more?

Wow, I'm sorry, I know this discussion is winding down but this post is nothing more (http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,70254-0.html) than regurgitated FUD from the media.

Not to bring out the tired old "Guns don't kill people..." cliche, but MySpace doesn't make anyone a slut. People who already are sluts make themselves more available on Myspace. Lesson: If you're worried about your girlfriend up and runnning out on you for someone on myspace, either:

    1) You don't trust her (you have a problem)
    2) Your girlfriend IS a slut (she has a probelm, and you're an idiot for putting so much into a relationship with her)
    3) Your relationship isn't that strong (you both have a problem)

Children get kidnapped from MySpace because they were never properly educated on strangers when they were younger, and they're hungry for attention. You don't hear this more often because the Media likes to demonize everything realitively new and online, and nobody is going to tell someone who'd kid got kidnapped it happened becuase they were a lousy parent.

What's the number one reaosn people get kidnapped from chatting, myspace, ect? I imagine it's agreeing to meet the person in a private place, or meeting in public but letting them convince you to go someplace private when you don't really know them and aren't able to defend yourself.

How about all the kids that are mollested there everyday? Like who? Do you have any real figures with sources showing Myspace to be the most dangerous place in the world you make it out to be, or are you just fearmongering?

I think that it is referring to the first set of iPods with a touch scroll wheel, as the very original had a physical turning wheel. Then Apple released a 5GB and 10GB model with touch scroll wheels, but still had the control buttons on the rim of the scroll wheel. I had one of the 10GB iPod's, but have since upgraded to a 10GB 3G model.

More importantly, seems like bad news for MS. If they can't bundle their way through the market, how will they maintain market domination with inferior software?

Yes, I hate MS Office that much.

Sounds like fan speed management software might be able to keep that big fan from needing to crankup to the max every few minutes if someone's software solution told it to blow slowly all the time instead of freaking out every few minutes due to no blowing in between spurts.

Looks like an Apple .1 update could include this fix or a third party freeware item.

I actually think Kefka was the best villain in FF historyevil insane clown hell-bent on destruction for no real reason. I mean, he basically destroyed the world JUST BECAUSE HE COULD. That's evil. Sephiroth was just a whiny bitch-boy with mommy issues. Call up Freud and lay down on the couch, pansy. Kefka will just be over here slaying more innocent civilians with his Light of Judgement.

I do think the writing for Kefka was held back by the 16-bit era. I still say that FFVI has the most potential story and character-wise for a complete re-make. As in, **** Final Fantasy XIII, give me a full next-gen 3D re-written version of FFVIpunch up that script and flesh out the characters that had obvious depth but were held back by simplistic writing.

Definitely better than the rest, ESPECIALLY FFVII.

Yeah, but they did about the same thing with the "switcher" ads a few years ago. People standing in front of a white background talking about the computer, but never showing it. What was the most memorable thing about those ads? A stoner chick that went "beep beep"?

Gopher, as much as i hate to say it, 800mhz G4 is not as fast as 2ghz P4. I just recently got rid of my 733mhz powermac (appx the same performance as 800mhz imac), and it was not as fast as my 1.5ghz athlon, which is about the same as a 2ghz p4

Well, the speed of your internet connection has nothing to do with it... it is all about your processor. It is possible that the program just happened to grab a really big protein from the server. I'm running on a G5@ 1.8 and have had some proteins taking many days to complete. My iBook G3 took forever. So, I'd just be patient.

Mac OS Rumors is run by a guy whose only job is to cull rumors from other rumor sites (like this one) and present them in a single place. It is not really a rumor source - just a rumor summary.

There will be a line of Motorola MPC8500 (G5) processors. The only questions are: 1) when, and 2) will they appear in Macs. The answer to 1 is "when the fab in which they will be produced is finished," which will probably be sometime no sooner than Q2 of next year. The answer to 2 is "probably." If a Motorola G5 fulfilling all of Apple's requirements existed, there is no reason Apple wouldn't want to use it, even if they already had the IBM GPUL.

By this time next year, I think it is likely that Apple will be in the process of transitioning its entire product lines to these new CPUs. I think the G3 will be replaced by the G4 in the iBook next year. Whichever CPU the PowerBook gets will be dependent upon which of these two next-gen CPUs is the most energy-efficient.

Fink, while Apple hard ware is lagging behind (for now), and it is expensive. I for one am not ready to abandon ship.

    a. I hate, no, I loathe, Windows XP.
    b. I love Apple designs
    c. I love OS X

so, I will hold on to my money, and if Apple disappoints me or makes me wait too long, I will just buy a new car, and be content with my desk top this the G5 is out.

I've seen you make several posts about NeXT in the past. Just curious, because I never had used it, but were you an avid user of it or are you a guru when it comes to tech history? (or both?)I used them a lot back then... but at first I used them more like a Mac rather than learning what they could actually do.

I first really started picking apart NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP when Apple bought NeXT. That was when I realized what I had been overlooking for the previous 4 years.

As it happens, I ended up making a lot of friends in the NeXT community, all of whom helped me out a ton when it came to answering questions about the software and history. I thought it was fascinating to see all the twists and turns that brought us to where we are now.

So yeah, I became a much better NeXT user after NeXT became part of Apple.

I really started spending a lot of time on the history end of things when I started noticing information disappearing from the net around 2000. I collected together as much info as I could and (like those who helped me) try to provide that information for others (which was why I started both my Rhapsody and NeXT sites).

It should be noted that beyond being a Mac user who used NeXT systems like Macs, I wasn't all that interested in computers back then either. I was majoring in mathematics and there really isn't much that a computer can do for you in the area I was studying. While working at the Geometry Center I had access to 15 SGIs, 10 Suns, 25 NeXTs and 20 Macs... and I was spending all my time in a back room on a white board. I considered that a missed opportunity which is why I have many of those systems today.

Plus I found that research is addicting. The more challenging the subject, the more addictive it is for me. Finding answers in the SGI community is much harder than finding answers in the Mac community. Finding answers in the NeXT community is much harder than finding answers in the SGI community. And finding answers to Rhapsody questions is about as hard as it gets, which is what I love about Rhapsody (that and having a platform all to myself :D ).

I can definitely say that Safari has gone the way of IE for Mac. Safari is never updated, it's WebKit is so outdated now that sites won't work with it, it's slow, it doesn't respond to user interaction (i.e. beachball).

By any chance do you have PithHelmet installed on Safari? I found that's the most massive CPU hog ever. If so, it may explain the issues you're having with Safari.

Which sites are you using with Safari which used to work but don't now? I've not seen this issue.

What you're saying though as regards stagnation is true. Apple's lack of updates for Safari, restricting it to the new OS only is absolutely pathetic. I would call it Microsoft tactics, but Microsoft have never done anything like this with a browser - IE 6 is available for versions of Windows other than the latest XP.

Shrek, its not personal - if you put a little thought into your threads there wouldn't be a problem. Like KC said, it might just be poor timing.

Again, I'm not out to sabotage your thread - what you had posted just didn't make any sense to me and I was responding. So don't let this stop you from starting a thread in the future.

And as for King Cobra - ask him about his Vacuum Of Infinite Density - or better yet, do a search for that. You're not the only one to get a little flak! :D
