Because we are installing something for our non-techie friends and family members and don't want to spend forever building the darn thing, installing Fink, X11, the window manager, etc... and then having to support it when it goes boom:
I don't expect an average user to build it. I didn't. I just installed the binary distribution (.pkg if I recall correctly) of OOo, and X11 was already built into OS X. I agree with you that the use of an X11 application has greater potential for problems with a novice user, but the installation of OOo itself did not seem that different from many other installations I have come across.

As for the other comments on problems with OOo: points well taken. As I said, I am not really a heavy "office" application user.

    Hey,

Is anyone else unable to get new work units? I tried downloading BOINC, and I attached to SETI@home, and Einstein@home, and I'm unable to get work from either of them. If you guys aren't having the problem, what do you recommend to try and trouble shot this?

    Thanks,

    Don

I think this iPhone is a dumb idea. They should concentrate on something cool, that everyone would like. My suggestion is iMidget. You get your very own midget to help you with your mac. The midget will not only be able to help you with your day to day work, but if you have an AppleCare plan, the midget will be able to assist you with all of your problems.

People are throwing around "Unix" and "Windows" like they used to throw around "RISC" and "CISC". There is no reason of which I am aware why a future version of Windows cannot scale to as many processors as any version of Unix, just like the nasty ol x86 ISA has yielded top-notch processors like the P4 and Athlon.

I think that everyone here who argues otherwise is engaged in a desperate attempt to justify their worldview that equates Apple with perfection and wisdom, or perhaps equates Microsoft with evil and boundless stupidity.

If I can't create sophisticated charts, access a large library of functions, create sophisticated array formulas, design pivot table reports, implement web controls, or program macros and create custom GUIs with an extended object library, then Google's offering is meaningless to me.

Hate to say this, but Microsoft will be king of the spreadsheet applications for a long time.

The Apple Store @ The Toronto Eaton Centre opened Saturday morning.

    http://static.flickr.com/50/141541460_ba98ec920d_o.jpg

Hundreds of Apple fans were waiting in line for the most anticipated store openining at The Eaton Centre in recent memory. The first 1000 received the much coveted limited edition Apple T-Shirt.

This is the second Apple Store in Canada (the other one also in Toronto @ Yorkdale Mall) and will be another boost to Apple's share of the market in Canada.

Since I first purchased my PowerBook last year, I've directly influenced the decision of more than 10 people in switching as well. If this trend continues, we're going to have quite a few people getting Macs this year.

... and ship them in November (2003).

They may ship laptops at the same time.

MWSF we should see the 933 PBG4 with bluetooth and superdrive. The 667 will be discontinued. Prices will drop a little. No change to the iBooks. Later in the year, the line will move to all G4s with the iBook topping out at 800MHz. They will string us along until fall 2003. They have to, you all know it.

970 machines will be announced at MWNY or shortly thereafter. They will be pricey, and they won't be ready to ship. eMac and iBook, and maybe iMac too, will stay G4 until 2004. PowerMac and PowerBook will be getting 970's, but don't expect to have one in hand until around November (over a year from now). Relax.

So, if I use PyMusique, and Apple cancels my account, thereby forcing me to use some other music store, or P2P service, Apple comes out ahead how, exactly?

No one's account is getting cancelled...
Yes, Apple might cancel your account, so go ahead and be the first to try. Thus, if they have to cancel one, or ten, or a thousand accounts to protect their service you really don't think they will do that? It wouldn't be any big deal if they lose a few thousand accounts over this, since that would likely be only a few thousand dollars in revenue (if even that), less than a day or two's legal fees for a half decent lawyer.

In that case, it won't take people very long to learn that they shouldn't use such obvious methods to violate the iTunes Music Store Terms Of Service (TOS) and (possibly) the DMCA.

Note: iTunes Music Store TOS -- that legal statement that you said "Yes" to when you signed up for the iTunes service.

    Everybody relax.
Exactly, that's why I said in my previous post that this doesn't really mean much.

Edit: replaced EULA with iTunes Music Store TOS.

Yeah, but they did about the same thing with the "switcher" ads a few years ago. People standing in front of a white background talking about the computer, but never showing it. What was the most memerable thing about those ads? A stoner chick that went "beep beep"?

well you still remember them. so they served their purpose

And to add to the design aspect. That is why all the adverts are using the iMac instead of the mini or macbook pro at this time.

Since the #1 product associated with apple is the iPod, and what computer looks like the iPod, the iMac.

They said the new iMac was created from the same people that brought you the iPod. Hence showing that design will give the most impact or familiarity with something they may already own or definitely what they have seen and read about.

EDIT: What i will say that is odd is that apple seems to not show the URL for the getamac campaign, nor do they own getamac.com from what i can tell.

    hi all,
as some know, i am developing...er...a piece of software
    http://liberalmac.gwtall.com/legacysystems/)
and i sent an email to the adc about it, and possibly selling it to apple.
when i got home from school today, my mom told me APPLE COMPUTER CALLED AND ASKED FOR ME!!!
she said she thought it was probably just some offer to get applecare or something, but i, being the crazy optimist that i am, wondered if this may be concerning the development of my software
a few minutes ago, i thought to myself, was this just a prank from a friend who knows im a mac fanboy?
well, i looked at our caller id logs and sure enough,
    916-399-7992
    APPLE COMPUTER

does anyone know if this the operating system development people or just a marketing number? if anyone knows, please post before a die of anxiety for possibility that actual devs at apple called for ME :)

    thanks:)

I spoke with Arlo Rose (via iChat) about a month ago or so, and he was hinting then the windows version would be completed soon. I use konfabulator to keep track of various things on my machine, and happy to have contributed to it's development early on.

Your chronic values don't seem to be right at all:

Ok, 10 years ago, 350 MB HD maybe were stat-of-the-art. But four years ago, 3 Gig should be? Surely not. As long as the new iBook won't come out, I've got an 1997 Siemens Nixdorf Scenic Computer (P1 200MMX), whose 3 Gig HD I've just changed a few months ago against a 60 GB one. And this Computer has never been State of the art! And even DVDs (ram) have been available in 1998, havent they?

I just got a call back for an interview at an Apple Store in VA. I say round two because this is the same store i worked at when i dissapeared from MacRumors last summer. This time as a Mac Genius.

According to a article at AppleInsider the 2004 paygrade from a Mac Gneius was between 15.08/hr and 22.62/hr. Do these numbers hold up?

You two are correct, 64-bit won't make much of a difference for the average person, but for people doing Final Cut, Maya, Mathematica (Mathematica might be something we should keep our eyes on, I'm getting excited already!) and things of that sort will. At this point in time, there won't be much if any difference, but the difference will be seen when in a few years when a large amount of programs are written to take advantage of the vast amounts of memory that 64-bit has to offer. Also, I think we may see Apple make a big leap into the pro video market (like Hollywood professional) being that the 64-bit will allow for a port of specialized programs, this will have the same effect on the video industry as OS X did on the scientific community; people will no longer need 3 computers to do one job. Instead of having your Mac for video editing alone, and then having to port that over to your SGI for some heavy duty work, it will now be able to have it all there. I gotta say Apple has alot of the bases covered, and although what I have said may not happen in huge places making multi-million dollar films, I have a feeling it will for smaller/mid-sized production houses it will have a profound impact. (Video edit -> use shake/Maya/Photoshop/any other effects program -> finish in Final Cut -> then one has the option to use Cinema Tools if in high fps ->Edit audio right there using anythign you'd like -> then DVD Studio Pro -> and for people on a tight(er) budget, that's you whole movie, right there!)

I love Opera on the Wii...its quick and easy. I don't use it to replace my Mac, only to check stuff when I'm down stairs and to lazy to go upstairs, or don't have my iBook with me.
