the new powermacs got a pretty glowing review in the latest macworld and people i know with the pentium 4 sometimes swear the pentium 3 was faster

I'm sure the new dualies are great machines, especially with Jaguar, but there are some fundamental limitations with the G4. It seems to have run its course. Time for something new.

Is it supposed to be a hardware fix and a new edition of the PS3 or will it be some sort of firmware fix.

Did anyone happen to notice that in that shot, the Palm OS Date Book is being displayed backwards?

Whoever ran across this one, thanks for the news submission.

Will check out the g5 version tonite, and the g4 version later.

If it crashes a lot, it won't be any different from the 'normal' OS X version, so I won't mind-- I'll take the daily FF crashes (in OS X but not XP strangely) any day over sluggish camino and safari.

SETI@home uses distributed computing to analyze radio signals received from space, looking for signs of intelligence. It's one of the oldest distributed computing projects around but has yet to find E.T.

I ran SETI, both with the old software and the BOINC version, until I had plenty of units completed (and got a pretty certificate to show off). It worked fine both as a background application and as a screensaver.

I think many MacRumors SETI team members moved on to distributing computing projects in other areas, especially medical research, but I haven't been tracking this forum for a while.

I love the idea of 'factoring out the errors in life.' The random errors I think you're talking about (while you can't discount) should in a test of like this be very minimal. Random errors occur from human inability to reproduce results among other things, the distribution will be strictly normal and an equally weighted least squares adjustment of the data will yield simple average, my point is though - there shouldn't be random errors. These are calculations performed based on code that doesn't change. The same machine should produce the same results in the same test under the same conditions. If it doesn't than there's a flaw in the design of the experiment (hard drive being accessed, other applications, or complications). There will always be outliers, I understand that, but this should be really freaking consistent.
You also mention user bias but if these guys' data is worth ANYTHING at all, than they should have checked that **** at the door.
As far as systematic errors, sure, the chip frequency could be buffed up a little or could be running a little hot. There are discrepancies in chip manufacturing, each chip is different, but under the same test it should result the same. These can be modeled though again by taking a larger sample of the same machines, the distribution of errors for these machines I have to believe is going to be minimal. That's an entire different test though, we wouldn't even be measuring the speed of the computers at that point - we'd only be looking at the distribution of errors in speed of the same machine. In effect, measuring Apple's ability to produce the same machine.
I don't like these guys, their experiment designs don't seem fair to all the machines, but that's just my opinion. Anyone else?

On a side note, I went out with this amazing girl last night and I'm just waiting on myself to screw it up... I really like her but jesus, I know I'm going to **** it up. :)

You are VERY incorrect.... you have to remember that the machines could have been configured differently and, as I pointed out, over time machines slow down if they are not maintained.

It is therefore HIGHLY possible that the DP 1GHZ DDRs in this test performed better than tha DP 1GHZ NO-DDRs because the DDRs are newer and still not heavily influenced by the factors that slow machines down over time.

Also, as I also pointed out, you have to think about the types of people that would be submitting results. Only a certain type of user post results which gives a biased view but then you have to remember that the type of DP 1GHZ user could be VERY difference from the iMac user and they could, therefore, have their machines configured and optimised VERY differently changing the distance between the machines.

And, so, as I mentioned in my earlier post, these results are not in stone, they are a guide and should be used in conjection with tests from other sources.

Same thing happened to many many Cubes, including mine. I rang up Apple, they sent some guys over the next day, they picked it up, and the next day, bam, back it was, all fixed up. I was impressed.

Of course, since the Cube's been on ice for so long, maybe Apple support won't be quite as helpful... but it's worth a shot. :) As somebody said, it is a known issue, and they seem willing to fix it at no cost.

I agree. It might take ours to do. But it is still faster to reinstall then trying to get rid of all this adware/spyware junk.

..and I hope you guys learned your lesson...
It's not going to take any of mine to do. :D

Unfortunately, I don't think I can wait much longer. The hamsters powering my ancient 9600 are slowly dying one by one and it's killing my productivity. I'm thinking of getting a stop-gap system until next summer since eBay Apple resales hold their value so well. Does the Formac have HD support like the 23 or is it more like the 22?

i just switched back to macs (for good now) with the dual 1.25 and formac 2010 (which has yet to arrive, grrrrrrr)

the dual 1.25 is so sweet, it lives up to the hype. I'm glad a waited for this one, and i'm sure youre next one will be even sweeter then my set-up

Well flash takes some CPU grunt to support...if you have a G3 or a low-end G4, its not surprising that flash will have a huge hit on ur CPU utilization. Even at my clock speeds, it still takes a 15-20% chunk, which is alot.

Another method is to force flash animations to only play when you click on them:

    http://www.floppymoose.com/

Go to the bottom of the page for the specialized flash-ad blocking code. It enables you to have all flash blocked on initial load-up. If you wanna see it, you simply click the region where the flash woudl be.

My answer depends on what measures Apple had taken to ensure that the company were following Apple's supplier guidelines (ie any monitoring or just laissez-faire) and what measures they take now that lapses have been admitted - both against this company and to ensure that similar problems aren't happening at any other supplier.

:p :p :p well not that far off......

The real issue would seem to be whether or not Apple can intice specialized software devopers that traditionally coded only for Sun &/or SGI to delve into Cocoa. If this can be accomplished, not only will Apple prosper, but so will former Sun/SGI customers. To those that don't know, Apple's hardware may be pricey for the average consumer, but it is dirt cheap for the average IT department.

Champions League 06-07 on the 360 and 'Worms' on Xbox Live Arcade. Champions League is ace, really nice looking and the 'Ultimate team' mode now has me hooked its a reallllllly good and addictive idea.

Worms on Live, is good but lacking some of the great weapons you used to get on the PC. No Holy Hand Grenade or Concrete Donkey. Oh Well. Fun anyway.
